Apart from hiking apparel and footwear, hiking accessories also offer added safety, convenience, and comfort. Choosing the right hiking accessory is not as simple as it might seem, you need to choose the right capacity, type, and a lot more. Here are the things to keep in mind when choosing hiking accessories in Hong Kong.
When looking for hiking tents, you should consider the capacity, durability against the elements, and weight of the tent. If you go hiking alone, then you can choose a tent good for 1 person. Otherwise, go for a tent designed for 2 or more people that offer extra width and length. When hiking in the mountains with a bad weather forecast, then you need a 4-season mountaineering tent to withstand the harsh winds or violent storms. If you’re saving weight, then choose ultralight tents.
A good hiking backpack should be capacious, feature-filled, and have the right fit. If you go hiking only for a couple of days, then a 30-50-liter backpack will suffice. If the trip lasts more than 3 days, you need a bag of 50-80-liter capacity. Such bag will be perfect for adults taking their kids as it can carry their children’s gear. A backpack should also have a lot of features such as pockets, rain cover, hydration reservoir, and a sleeping bag compartment. Also, the size and comfort matter when choosing backpacks. Choose one that is appropriate for your length and has a hip belt tight enough on your hips.
When choosing hiking sleeping bags, take note of the temperature rating, the type of insulation, weight, and features. If you have plans hiking during summer, a summer sleeping bag will be your best bet as it can withstand temperatures of above 32 degrees Celsius. Otherwise, you should opt for winter sleeping bag. For temperate weather, a 3-season sleeping bag will be the best option. Insulation is another factor to consider when choosing sleeping bags. For cold or dry conditions, you can select one that has a “down” insulator. When hiking on a tropical terrain, a sleeping bag with synthetic insulator will be a good choice. Last but not the least, check the features of the sleeping bag. A sleeping bag should also have a comfortable hood, compatible zippers, etc.
When hiking at night in the woods, there’s nothing more convenient than a hands-free flashlight in a form of a headlamp. Hiking headlamps are classified into three: flood, spot, and flood/spot types. Although not effective for navigating a trail in the dark, flood headlamps are great when building tents since they are specialized for up-close work. Whereas, a spot headlamp excels when hiking trails after dark since they cast a narrow beam, enabling long-distance viewing. If you want one that is somewhere in between, then a flood/spot type is an ideal choice.
