AKG Acoustics, or by their full name: Akustische und Kino-Gerate (Acoustic and Cinema Equipment in English), is an Austrian manufacturer of audio equipment and products. They produce audio products such as microphones, headphones, wireless audio systems, and other related audio accessories for both professional and consumer markets.
AKG was founded in Vienna in 1947 by Viennese physicist Dr. Rudolf Gorike and Viennese engineer Ernst Pless and currently operates in Austria. The company was first founded with the main business of providing technical equipment and support for cinemas such as film projectors and speaker systems. From there, the business expanded into other audio and sound-related products such as car horns, door intercoms, telephone carbon capsules, headsets, and cushion speakers. The moving coil technology and the principle of mass load membranes are AKG's first patents which would allow the products to have extended frequency ranges.
However, the microphone would eventually become the signature product of AKG Acoustics. In 1953, AKG made the D12 microphone. This microphone got AKG to international fame as it was a superbly high quality microphone at that time; it also became the standard for voice transmissions. Their microphones are used in many professional studios today for high fidelity audio recording with little noise.
Today AKG is a part of Harman International Industries after it was acquired by them in 1994. Through this acquisition, AKG Acoustics USA was formed and headquartered in the San Fernando Valley.
AKG has been producing audio products for well over a few decades, and they have all the know-how. Their headphones are one of the most natural sounding headphones out there, staying true to the original recording's tonality. Their microphones record sound just like our ears, allowing all the natural tones to carry forward into a recording track with great accuracy.
Their audio products performance is proven by the credibility of being with many legendary stars throughout their tours such as the great Frank Sinatra and the Rolling Stones. Today many people can enjoy the fantastic studio performance of sound in its truest form with accuracy that only AKG can provide.
AKG microphones are one of the most accurate and reliable microphones ever made. The original AKG D12 microphone in 1953 set the standard for all voice transmissions in its day. The most notable microphones of all in AKG's product line is the first C12 that was introduced in 1953, along with its successors that came thereafter.
AKG is also particularly proud of the usage of their microphones on the MIR space station; part of the Audimir space project for room simulation in outer space. Besides that particular usage, AKG microphones are used in many professional recording studios. Recordings of the Beatles and the vocals of ABBA all used AKG microphones - a gold plated AKG C535 high quality condenser vocal microphone was made for the legendary Frank Sinatra too.
AKG's headphones are mainly very high quality headphones, wishing to provide only the best natural sounds to its users. They are also the pioneers for open-back and supra-aural (on-ear) headphones; the AKG K50 headphone that was introduced in 1959 is the world's first supra-aural and open-back headphones. Open-back headphones provide much better sound acoustics, which in turn translates to natural tones in a pair of headphones, providing better sound.
AKG Professional Headphones
AKG produces headphones for two different markets: the professional market and the general consumer market. Many professional studios opt for AKG studio-grade headphones for audio monitoring because of its high-specifications. The professional grade headphones provide an almost perfect replication of the real recording sound, allowing sound engineers and producers to listen properly.
One of the most popular choice for AKG professional headphones are the AKG K240. This pair of headphones is commonly used in top recording studios because of its accurate sound in monitoring. Other AKG professional headphones such as the AKG K702, K701, and Q701 are also commonly used in many recording studios.
AKG Consumer Headphones
Consumer headphones by AKG are slightly less expensive and are designed to be more stylish to appeal to the mass market. AKG consumer headphones are also tuned to be very exciting to listen to, featuring very punchy bass and warmer high pitches – making these just really comfortable and pleasant to listen to.
AKG's consumer headphones come in both wired and wireless forms. The wireless headphones such as the Y50BT and K915 utilize Bluetooth as a means of connecting to a laptop or smartphones; some also come with the capability to connect with a standard audio cable, offering versatility in use.
Wired headphones like the more simple yet powerful Y30U and soft-padding K430 connect to all manner of devices with a standard 3.5mm audio cable. Wired headphones are more suitable to those who aren't always on the move and do not want the inconvenience of charging their headphones constantly.
AKG's microphones and headphones have long been on the world stage with many artists – even in space for research. It is because of their immense quality and natural sound signature that many choose AKG as their brand for audio. When it comes to headphones, AKG knows their stuff.
