The hip-hop giant retailer

American Apparel was created in the dorm room of the Canadian founder, Dov Charney at Tufts University, using a mobile phone to handle orders and conduct business. The name “American Apparel” wasn’t invented by the founder itself. In fact, it was the owner of Kellsport Industries idea, Bob Smith during a brief partnership. After a fallout with the business, Charney returned the investment money to Bob Smith and continue using the trademark name. Today, American Apparel has the largest garment facility that produces more than 55,000 different products and garments, employing more than 4,000 people across two buildings. While most advertisements were mostly dubbed as controversial by the advertising standards, some were cleverly used as a form of branding. One example is the advertisement to highlight the treatment of his workers, promoting American Apparel products as “sweatshop free”. In 2014, American Apparel released a provocative ad, featuring a topless model with the words, “Made in Bangladesh” written across her chest, in efforts to attract the attention to the company's fair labor practices.
