How to Properly Use and Take Care of Memory Cards with These 7 Tips

Regardless of the type of camera, there’s this common denominator among many different variants – the memory card. It serves as a backup storage to store photos when your camera’s internal memory is filled completely. Although it’s just an add-on device, it still important to take care of it. Overlooking the following procedures below will not only affect your memory card but also your camera.

If you encounter an error, eject the memory card

If some of your images are removed due to an error, it’s best to quit using the memory card. This is because if you keep using it, there’s a chance you might overwrite other images, which is the worst thing that could happen. If the worst happens, you can still recover the images by using data recovery tools or services which require additional time and expenses.

Add or delete images one at a time

In case you didn’t know, deleting images from your card can easily reduce its life. When you add or remove data one at a time, it takes more processing power which can take a toll on your memory card. Thus, it’s recommended to erase images all at once or better yet format your memory card. Not only it will extend the life of your memory card but also prevent errors from happening.

Avoid overstuffing your memory card

Normally, people delete images off the memory card once it’s full. But it’s best to remove the images regularly rather than wait for all the memory to be used up. You won’t have to worry about losing gigabytes of images if you lose a camera or memory card since you already moved the best photos to another device and deleted the unimportant ones.

Better have a backup memory card

It would be totally unfortunate if your memory card dies halfway through your trip. However, having a backup will allow you to continue using your camera. Also, having an extra memory card means you will not lose all the images from a shoot if your card dies.

Eject the memory card properly from your computer

Taking the memory card out of a card reader or computer without properly ejecting it could corrupt the data. To prevent this, make sure to follow the right procedure by right clicking the drive designated to your memory card. Then, click “eject’ and remove the card from the card reader.

Keep your camera’s firmware updated

Just like in smartphone operating systems, camera manufacturers release firmware updates every so often. These will not only keep your camera updated but also fix bugs and errors that are related to the memory card.

Replace batteries before they run out of juice

Make sure to check the battery level of your camera and replace them before they completely run out of juice. Doing so will prevent the battery from running out while the camera is in the process of creating an image to your card. It will avoid losing the last image and stop errors from occurring when it is not fully created to your memory card.
