CN Entertainment Ltd. Departures (VCD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
HK$ 63.00

Winner of Best Foreign Language Film at the 81st Academy Awards, Departures takes a sensitive look at life through the rituals of death. Directed by Takita Yojiro (When the Last Sword is Drawn), Departures (a.k.a. Okuribito) follows the experiences of a young undertaker as he grows into his work. Backdropped by an elegant score from master composer Hisaishi Joe, Departures presents a simple, yet poignant study of how one man comes to terms with his unconventional profession, and how the customs of death affect and reflect the course of life. At times humorous and at times heartbreaking, the film approaches its topic with respect and realism, revealing a fascinating aspect of Japanese culture rarely seen on screen. Leading man Motoki Masahiro (Gemini) anchors the film with a magnificent, understated performance. Co-starring popular actress Hirosue Ryoko (Bubble Fiction: Boom or Bust) and veteran Yamazaki Tsutomu, Departures swept 10 awards at the 32nd Japan Academy Awards including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress. Out of work with nowhere to go, cellist Kobayashi Daigo (Motoki Masahiro) and his wife (Hirosue Ryoko) leave Tokyo and move back to his sleepy hometown. Daigo answers a help-wanted ad for what he thinks is a travel agency, but turns out to be an encoffinment agency. Taking the job anyway, he begins a new life as an encoffinment specialist under grisly owner Sasaki (Yamazaki Tsutomu). Despite his initial fears and misgivings about cleansing and clothing corpses, Daigo soon discovers the job and the town suit him just fine. Carefully preparing the departed for their final journey with a musician's precision, he finds a greater appreciation and understanding for life. The stigma of the profession, however, is not lost on his wife, and his choice of work gradually takes toll on their marriage.

When Michael Tse's popular undercover cop character Laughing Gor was killed off in the 2009 TVB police drama E.U., fans mourned his death with online memorial services and a creative outpouring of grief. This unprecedented show of support led TVB to resurrect Laughing Gor on the big screen for the blockbuster spin-off prequel Turning Point. The first film to bear the Shaw Brothers logo since 2002's Drunken Monkey, the TVB-Shaw Brothers co-production is devoted to Laughing Gor's backstory, building the legend behind the struggling small-timer who would eventually become the swaggering, scenery-chewing undercover cop that Hong Kong audiences fell in love with. Though the leading character originates from the small screen, Turning Point's story is largely independent of the TV drama and requires no previous knowledge. Previously best known on the big screen as Ekin Cheng's sidekick in Young and Dangerous, Michael Tse makes an appealing lead as the twice-undercover caught between the police and the underworld, but what makes Turning Point especially exciting are all the other names attached. Jack-of-all-trades director Herman Yau (True Women for Sale) helms the crime actioner, while acclaimed actors Anthony Wong and Francis Ng make charismatic turns as rival triad leaders. Also making supporting appearances are action star Yuen Biao, Eric Tsang, Felix Wong, Wayne Lai, and TVB starlet Fala Chen in her film debut. For the TV drama fans, there are also crossover cameos from E.U. stars Ron Ng and Sammul Chan. Undercover cop-turned-triad leader One (Anthony Wong) sends his underling Laughing (Michael Tse) undercover into the police force. But the police send him back into the triads to be an undercover under One! Laughing walks the line passing intel between the two sides, but he's running for his life from both sides of the law after a botched drug bust leaves his handler (Yuen Biao) comatose, and underworld bosses Zatoi (Francis Ng) and Fook (Eric Tsang) out for his head.

CN Entertainment Ltd. My Ex-wife's Wedding (VCD) (English Subtitled) (Hong Kong Version)
HK$ 55.00

Based on the popular Chinese novel In a Romance With My Ex-Wife, My Ex-Wife's Wedding represents a new type of Chinese commercial cinema: It was made with Korean funding, it stars a Mainland Chinese cast, and it was led by a Hong Kong-based creative team. The result is a universally accessible comedy about learning what one truly wants for oneself and how to deal with the consequences of choices already made. Cinematographer Jason Kwan (Love in a Puff) puts a gorgeous polish on the sights of Beijing to match director Lee Kung Lok's equally attractive cast, led by Aloys Chen (Mulan), Lu Yi (Aftershock), and Yolanda Yuan (Like a Dream). Official selections at the 2010 Pusan International Film Festival and the 2010 Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, My Ex-Wife's Wedding is a crowdpleasing film that explores the complexities of relationships in modern China with a touch of humor. The marriage between Ma Yong (Aloys Chen) and Xiaohong (Yolanda Yuan) seemed picture perfect until they got divorced. However, Xiaohong seems to be unable to let go of Yong, to the point of intruding on his relationship with his new girlfriend (Debbie Goh). Irritated, Yong decides to match his ex-wife with his bumbling photographer friend Zhang Qi (Lu Yi). But when things begin to go well for the two, Yong realizes that he may still in love with Xiaohong, creating a complicated web of intercrossing relationships that will be difficult to untangle.

Five years in the making, Yoshinaga Fuyumi's award-winning comic Ooku: The Inner Chambers finally arrives on the big screen with The Lady Shogun and Her Men. Depicting a fictional world in which women took up traditional male positions after a mysterious disease wiped out a majority of the male population, the series has been lauded for its ability to give a fresh spin on the Japanese period drama through gender reversals of social roles. Planned at the beginning of the comic series' run, the adaptation by writer Takahashi Natsuko (Hana Yori Dango TV series) and director Kaneko Fuminori (Kisarazu Cat's Eye) tells the story of the first series' first chapter. In it, Arashi's Ninomiya Kazunari (Letters From Iwo Jima) plays a man who enters the court of the Edo Castle and ends up becoming the chosen lover of the new shogun, played by Shibasaki Kou (Suspect X). The hit period drama also co-stars Horikita Maki (Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac) and Tamaki Hiroshi (Nodame Cantabile). In the year 1716, a mysterious disease wipes out a majority of men, leaving only one man for every four woman. Gender roles have been reversed, with women taking traditional male roles and men becoming little more than reproduction tools. To save his family, 19-year-old Mizuno (Ninomiya Kazunari) enters the Inner Chamber in the Edo Castle, leaving his girlfriend Onobu (Horikita Maki) behind. There, Mizuno skillfully wins over schemers like Matsushima (Tamaki Hiroshi), eventually becoming the Chamber Groom. Meanwhile, when the young shogun dies, Yoshimune (Shibasaki Kou) is appointed to take over as the shogun. After Mizuno catches her attention, Yoshimune decides to name Mizuno her first bedmate. However, the job comes with potentially fatal consequences for everyone involved.

Hong Kong's "girls with guns" genre makes a return with Special Female Force, inspired by the classic 80s/90s The Inspectors Wear Skirts series. Directed by Lan Kwai Fong series creator Wilson Chin, the police action comedy recruits TVB star Eliza Sam (Angel In-the-Making), Jeana Ho (Lan Kwai Fong), Anita Chui (Robbery), Cathryn Lee (Hungry Ghost Ritual), Mandy Ho and Joyce Cheng (iGirl) to play the new cadets of an all-female police task unit. An entertaining mix of girl power action, police academy procedural and bawdy comedy, Special Female Force also co-stars Stephy Tang, Shirley Yeung, Hazel Tong, Jessica C, Rose Chan and Margiela Kwok as members of the first-generation task unit, and features special appearances by Jade Leung and Philip Ng. Two decades ago, the "Rafflesia" task unit was sent to Thailand to capture a terrorist known as "President," but the mission failed and the Rafflesia unit was wiped out. Twenty years later, the storied Rafflesia unit is revived with six new recruits. Fa (Eliza Sam), the daughter of an original Rafflesia member, undergoes intense training with five other young women of very different personalities and skill sets. At first the six women do not get along, but they gradually grow into a real team under the tough tutelage of Madam Fong. Upon completion of training, the unit is sent out to Malaysia on a dangerous top-secret mission targeting President.

What would you be willing to erase from the world in order to live another day? Satoh Takeru stars in the film adaptation of the novel If Cats Disappeared from the World (a.k.a. Sekai kara Neko ga Kieta nara) by Kawamura Genki. Directed by Nagai Akira (Judge!), the film brilliantly blends fantasy and human drama to capture the emotional world of a young man coming to terms with life and death. Wong Kar Wai produces novelist Zhang Jiajia's directorial debut See You Tomorrow, based on a story from his own book Passing From Your World. Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Takeshi Kaneshiro team up once again in their long overdue return to comedy. Adding to the star power are Angelababy (Rise of the Legend), Eason Chan (Office), Lynn Xiong (Ip Man), Du Juan (American Dreams in China) and Sandrine Pinna (A Touch of Light), plus cameo appearances by Lu Han (The Great Wall) and Chris Lee (Bodyguards and Assassins). Sprinkled with offbeat details, wacky set pieces and hilarious references, See You Tomorrow has the zany humor of an old-school Hong Kong comedy and the dazzling production values of a Jet Tone film, what with Peter Pau and Cao Yu on cinematography and WKW regulars Alfred Yau and William Chang on art direction and costume design. Besides the sumptuous visuals, the film's episodic structure and use of voiceover narration are also reminiscent of Wong Kar Wai works. Chen Mo (Tony Leung) runs a bar with his quirky friend Guan Chun (Takeshi Kaneshiro), but more importantly, he's a "ferryman" who helps clients navigate the pain of heartbreak. Neighbor Xiao Yu (Angelababy) seeks his guidance on how to help her idol Ma Li (Eason Chan), a singer reeling from his breakup with Jiang Jie (Lynn Xiong). At the same time, Guan Chun's first love, amnesiac pie shop owner Mao Mao (Sandrine Pinna), suddenly returns to town with no memory of him or the family recipe. While Guan Chun goes to ridiculous lengths to help Mao Mao, Chen Mo takes Xiao Yu under his wing, but the process awakens the memories of his own past love.

After The Housemaid, acclaimed director Im Sang Soo again delves into the decadent and despicable world of the obscenely wealthy in The Taste of Money. The provocative film, which makes references back to The Housemaid, enters the morally corrupt private circle of Korea's rich and richer, painting a scathing vision of glamorous, empty lives driven by money, lust, and obsession. Screened in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, The Taste of Money stars veteran actor Baek Yoon Shik (Tazza: The High Rollers), The Housemaid's Yoon Yeo Jung, Kim Kang Woo (A Better Tomorrow), and Kim Hyo Jin (In My End is My Beginning), as well as Ohn Joo Wan (My Mighty Princess), Filipina actess Maui Taylor, and renowned film critic Darcy Paquet. Young Jak (Kim Kang Woo) works as a private secretary for CEO Yoon (Baek Yoon Shik) who has long sold his soul for wealth, though true power lies in the hands of his ruthless wife Geum Ok (Yoon Yeo Jung). Yoon is carrying on an affair with domestic helper Eva (Maui Taylor), while Geum Ok has her way with Young Jak. Geum Ok's daughter Na Mi (Kim Hyo Jin), the lone innocent in a rotting family, also has eyes for Young Jak. On the surface, all is cold, calm, and elegant, but lives spiral dangerously out of control when relationships are tested and secrets revealed.

In the wake of Aftershock, China's top blockbuster filmmaker Feng Xiaogang has come up with another powerful tale of survival and humanity set against the backdrop of a devastating disaster! Adapted from the novel Remembering 1942 by its author Liu Zhenyun (who also wrote the book Feng's 2003 film Cell Phone is based on), Back to 1942 reveals the tragic truth of a dark chapter in Chinese history where millions died in a famine. In this epic period drama, the director takes a compelling and comprehensive look at the disaster from various perspectives, for which he enlists a cast of acclaimed actors including Zhang Guoli, Chen Daoming, Xu Fan, Zhang Hanyu, Li Xuejian, as well as Academy Awards winners Tim Robbins and Adrien Brody. Feng's harrowing and hard-hitting depiction of this wound of the nation takes place in 1942. That year, the Henan Province was struck by a serious drought and a plague of locusts. The resulting famine caused the death of three million people, with some refugees resorting to cannibalism in desperation. The film follows the family of village landlord Master Fan (Zhang Guoli), who gets robbed by starving refugees and, like millions others, is forced to flee from their homeland for a chance of survival. Among this mass exodus is preacher An Ximan (Zhang Hanyu), who witnesses the horrors firsthand and that leads him to question his faith. Meanwhile, struggling to resist the Japanese military invasion, the Kuomingtang government fails to offer any relief to the war-ravaged, famine-stricken people, and not until the intervention of American correspondent Theodore White (Adrien Brody) does the world learn of this disaster...

In 2011, two films about the Feast at Hong Gate a pivotal event during the Chu-Han Contention that has since become popular in Chinese literature and pop culture went into production around the same time: White Vengeance by Daniel Lee (Three Kingdoms: Resurrection of the Dragon) and The Last Supper by Lu Chuan (City of Life and Death). While White Vengeance likens the deadly rivalry between Liu Bang and Xiang Yu to a game of chess, The Last Supper takes an almost operatic approach to the story, creating a grandiose, visually breathtaking epic that offers a fresh perspective on one of the most famous banquets in Chinese history. Liu Ye (City of Life and Death), Daniel Wu (Overheard) and Chang Chen (The Grandmaster) co-star in this bold, controversial film that implies the seeds of modern Chinese politics may have been planted as far back as 2,000 years ago. After years of war that led to the establishment of the Han Dynasty, Emperor Liu Bang (Liu Ye) has become paranoid about conspirators around him and plagued by nightmares. In his nightmares, he begins to remember his rise to the throne, starting with his days as a peasant fighting the Qin ruler under the leadership of Xiang Yu (Daniel Wu). However, when Liu is suspected of betraying Xiang by entering the Qin Palace before his lord after their victory, Xiang's advisors conspire to kill Liu during a banquet at Hong Gate. Liu escapes and wins a brutal war with Xiang's forces, thanks to help from defected general Han Xin (Chang Chen). However, Liu's victory prompts him to rethink the Hong Gate banquet and the events surrounding it.

Since 2010, Hong Kong television network TVB and Shaw Brothers Studio have been providing laughter to Hong Kongers all over the world with their annual Lunar New Year comedy. The tradition continues in 2013 with their fourth LNY film I Love Hong Kong 2013! TVB is sending out all their stars to ring in the Year of the Snake with this uproarious comedy about a kind restaurant owner who has spent all his life helping everyone but himself. In addition to familiar TVB artists like Bosco Wong, Michael Tse, Kate Tsui and Wong Cho Lam, I Love Hong Kong 2013 also stars pop veteran Alan Tam and 90s starlet Veronica Yip, in her first film in over 16 years. Filled with laughs, chills, tears and even a dash of song-and-dance, I Love Hong Kong 2013 is the best way to celebrate Lunar New Year! All his life, restaurant owner Chi Hung (Alan Tam) has given everything to help those around him, even to the point of taking over his employees' debts. However, that kindness has come at the expense of his family, especially the happiness of his wife Yeung Yeung (Veronica Yip). Chi Hung's benevolence streak comes to an end when he comes under heavy debt, and he is forced to sell the restaurant to Shek Sau (Chan Bak Cheung), his lifelong nemesis. Before Chi Hung commits suicide, an angel (Eric Tsang) appears and reminds Chi Hung of all the good times he had at the restaurant as a young man (Bosco Wong), including his arrival in Hong Kong, his courtship with young Yeung Yeung (Kate Tsui) and even the events that turned young Shek Sau (Michael Tse) against him. Soon, Chi Hung learns that a little help from his friends is all he needs. This edition includes making of, music videos and trailer.

Prolific screenwriter Lau Ho Leung (The Great Magician) makes his directorial debut with cops-and-robbers action comedy Two Thumbs Up, which stars Francis Ng (Triumph In The Skies) as low-level gangster Big F, who's just gotten out of prison. He wastes no time in tracking down his old comrades, picking up bowling alley employee Crazy B (Simon Yam, Election), back-alley hairstylist Johnny T (Patrick Tam, As The Light Goes Out) and mechanic East L (Mark Cheng, A True Mob Story) in quick succession. As it turns out, Big F has a nice payday planned for the gang. He wants to rob a truck transporting dirty money across the Mainland-Hong Kong border, and to do that, the gang's got to pose as police officers. On the day of the heist, the men set off in their minibus-turned-police-vehicle dressed as cops and armed with BB guns. What they don't know is that another group of criminals also has its sights set on the truck and those people have AK-47s.
