Apple AirPods HK Specs and Review - Wireless Ear Buds That’s Still Worth Buying

When Apple launched the iPhone 7 in 2016, one controversial move stood out: the flagship smartphone no longer features a headphone jack. Instead, users connect older headphones to the phone’s port via an adapter, use the included earbuds that connect the same way or opt for wireless Bluetooth headphones.

Using Bluetooth headphones, however, can be a pain. Pairing them can be a nightmare, and signals sometimes drop in the middle of a call or a song. Apple’s attempt to fix those problems is now available in the form of AirPods, thanks to the company’s unique technology, that instantly pairs with a nearby iPhone. Apple AirPods also have sensors allowing them to automatically mute a song when one bud is removed, while two taps on the side activate Siri, Apple’s digital assistant.

Design and Comfort

Apple has a very distinctive style, and the AirPods adhere rigidly to this aesthetic. In fact, if you’ve used Apple’s wired EarPods (which come as standard with the company’s phones and iPods) then you’re probably familiar with how the AirPods look since they are almost identical, minus any cables. The biggest difference between the two is the small arm which comes down from the earbud section. The AirPod’s arm is significantly thicker than that of the EarPods to fit the device’s battery and microphone.

Sticking with the classic EarPod design also means that the AirPods dispense with modern conveniences like replaceable silicone ear tips that secure the earphones firmly in your ears. Instead, the AirPods rely entirely on their one-size-fits-all plastic housing to keep themselves sat firmly in your ears.

Audio Quality

Of course, the sound is the most important quality for any audio equipment. Apple’s AirPods are sure to please casual listeners looking for a reliable pair of wireless earbuds. Unless you are a hardcore audiophile, the rich, clear sound quality will be more than satisfactory. Through the AirPods, the music sounded well-balanced, with just enough bass to add depth without feeling overwhelming. Most importantly, the sound never cut out, which is a problem with other wireless headphones.

Connectivity has historically been a bit of a mixed bag with Bluetooth headphones on iPhones. Some will happily connect automatically just by turning it on, while others will require you to dig into your phone’s Bluetooth menu every time. The AirPods, in contrasts, are a dream. Simply open the AirPods’ case next to your phone, then select the option on your phone screen to pair them. The AirPods themselves will then pair each and every time you put them into your ears, and will automatically disconnect when you take both out. This convenience also carries across other Apple devices including iPads and the Apple Watch.

Siri Controls

Unlike most portable headphones released nowadays, the AirPods don’t include remote controls. Instead, you’ll rely almost entirely on Siri (activated by a quick double-tap on either bud) to adjust volume and skip tracks, in addition to performing a number of other voice-activated functions.

The AirPods are small and convenient due to the way they pair quickly and easily with your phone, but it’s a bit unfortunate that you need to take your phone out to perform most controls if you don’t want to look like you’re talking to yourself in public.

Battery Life

The long stems protruding from the bottom of each earbud might be bulky, but the plus side of that bulk is that the AirPods’ battery life is really great. Apple claims the AirPods should be able to offer five hours of playback before its battery depletes. The charging case is an excellent work of design. You charge the case up via its Lightning port, and once fully charged, the case holds enough power to fully charge your AirPods over four times.

A small LED underneath the charging case’s lid glows red or green to indicate the AirPods’ charge status, and you can open the lid near a paired phone to see the relative charge levels of both pop up on the screen.

Is it worth buying AirPods in 2019?

If your old AirPods have seen better days, or you are looking to buy your first pair of truly wireless earbuds, it’s worth buying the AirPods particularly if you already use an iPhone to play music- just don’t spend money upgrading your old AirPods if they’re still in good working order.

How much do AirPods cost in Hong Kong?

AirPods price with regular Charging Case costs HK$1,299 while it costs HK$1,599 for AirPods with Wireless Charging Case. The latest AirPods Pro costs HK$1,999 in Hong Kong.
