The iPhone X – 10 Years of Apple Innovation All in One Phone

The 10th-anniversary version of the iPhone was finally announced yesterday. Known as the iPhone X, the features available on the phone is a testament of Apple’s innovation over the years. The iPhone X is one of the most highly-anticipated smartphones released in 2017, not because it offers anything innovative or new by industry standards but because Apple has made big changes to the iPhone X compared to what we are so used to its predecessors.

As the pre-released leaks and rumours suggested, the iPhone X features numerous trends that we have been seeing in the smartphone industry today. Here are some of the main highlights of the iPhone X that you should know about:

Design-wise, the iPhone X features the most radical design on an iPhone to date, making it the best-looking phone Apple has ever made. The bezel-less screen makes it look more voluminous yet in reality, it still has a smaller size than the Plus series of iPhones. The rear is made of glass to enable wireless charging (which will be discussed in detail below). Sporting a svelte design of 5.65 inches long and 2.79 inches wide, the phone is easy to hold in one hand.

As foretold, the iPhone X has an expansive 5.8-inch edge-to-edge screen, both horizontally and vertically. This makes the iPhone X one of the least-bezelled phones on the market. That only means one thing – the absence of a physical home button that has become an iPhone signature.

Not only that, Apple has finally decided to upgrade the screen to an OLED display (about time!) which Apple calls the Super Retina HD display, instead of sticking with its LCD routes. This enables the phone to deliver a 2436 x 1125 display resolution, a significant upgrade beyond the 1080p screen ceiling Apple has offered on the previous iPhones. The new display offers deeper blacks and richer colours than ever before – on par with what rivals Samsung has been delivering.

Although iPhones have always been praised for their cameras, the iPhone X brings its camera capabilities up another notch. The new flagship now sports two 12MP cameras at its rear, one being a wide-angle lens and the other a telephoto lens. Both come with optical image stabilization, compensating for hand shakiness when taking photos. The camera sensors on the iPhone X are also larger and faster, offering an f/1.8 aperture on the wide-angle lens and f/2.4 aperture lens on the telephoto lens.

The camera upgrades extend beyond the rear cameras. In terms of the front camera, the iPhone X is equipped with a 7MP TrueDepth camera that packs a considerable amount of technology. Firstly, it adds Portrait Mode to your selfies, enabling you to exhibit a background blur to them too. Aside from the 7MP camera, the cut-out atop the screen also features a variety of sensors, an infrared camera, and sophisticated face-mapping dot projector which leads to…

The iPhone X also marks the first appearance of Apple’s facial recognition software – the Face ID. The Face ID enables users to unlock the smartphone simply by looking at it. There are a handful of smartphones that already feature facial recognition but Apple’s approach seems to make it more reliable than what we have seen on other devices. The software will take loads of different face angles, making it more accurate. Apple seems to be confident about the Face ID, claiming that the Face ID will not be spoofed by photos and works in the dark as well. According to Apple, Face ID is also much more secure compared to Touch ID and having increased security is always better.

You can also bid farewell to annoying charger cables as the iPhone X supports a wireless charging feature. The wireless charging support also introduces Apple’s new AirPower charging pad that can charge every new Apple product – Apple Watches, Airpods, and the iPhone X. The charging pad is wide enough to provide ample space to charge multiple devices at once. However, Apple has not mentioned how much the AirPower pad will cost and it will most probably make an appearance sometime next year. You do not have to wait until then to enjoy the phone’s wireless charging feature though, as the iPhone X can also be charged via Qi wireless chargers as well. Speaking of wireless charging…

Apple has announced that the iPhone X will last two hours longer than the standard iPhone 7. This will amount to an all-day battery life, depending on usage. Moreover, you can reduce battery consumption further by switching it to low-power mode in iOS 11. The iPhone X will also be the first Apple phone to come with fast-charging capabilities that give you a 50% charge in just 30 minutes.

The iPhone X is tentatively due to be released on 3rd November 2017. The iPhone X is currently priced at USD 999.00 (approx. HKD 7804).

Apple seems to be flexing its innovative muscles with the iPhone X. Boasting a never-before-seen facelift and impressive features, the iPhone X seems to be an excellent device to represent and celebrate 10 years of Apple’s iconic smartphone brand.
