Asus RT-AC68U WiFi Router HK Review: Setting the benchmark for wireless performance

As veterans in the computing industry, it goes without saying that Asus knows the pains of having a slow Internet connection. With that said, the brand has its own range of home networking devices that are designed to provide stable and fast Internet connectivity. One of these products is the Asus RT-AC68U, which is a high-performance WiFi router that you can install at home or in the office. The AC68U is regarded as one of the best premium wireless routers available in the market, offering advanced security features and a wide array of network configuration options. Below is a rundown of the Asus RT-AC68U’s key features:

Unlike most WiFi routers in the market which have a horizontal stance by default, the AC68U is designed to stand upright vertically. Although this makes it highly noticeable, this enables the Asus router to consume less space thanks to its svelte footprint. Like its predecessors, Asus has decided to stick with the same textured finish for the AC68U’s body, which is a plus point as it repels fingerprints and dust. The diamond-shaped patterns on the body give the device a stylish look that can fit like a glove in any modern living room. The usual array of LED lights which enables you to easily check on the statuses of the ports, the Internet connection, the wireless network, and the USB ports, is placed strategically on the front.

The AC68U router also enables you to connect to the Internet more easily, thanks to the Asus Quick Internet Setup function that comes along with it. It will pop up on any devices attached to the router, either by WiFi or Ethernet. All users need to do is create an SSID to have access to the Internet.

Internal Components

The differences between this Asus router and its predecessor, the AC66U, is not only limited to external features but extends internally as well. The Asus RT-AC68U has significant upgrades in terms of its internal components, featuring a new Broadcom BCM4709 WiFi chipset, a dual-core 800MHz Arm Cortex A9 CPU, and 256MB of DDR RAM. This combination of high-end internal specifications enables the Asus AC68U to provide faster Internet speeds and stronger wireless connections. Moreover, the AC68U boots faster and caches and buffers data better under heavy loads thanks to the dual-core Arm Cortex A9 processor.

The RT-AC68U also supports the AiCloud mobile app, which allows users to access a local network remotely. The app is simple to use; all you need is to open the app while on a local Wi-Fi network to have permanent access via your mobile device. This comes in handy if you are constantly away from your home or office. Furthermore, there are three aspects to AI Cloud – Cloud Disk, Smart Access, and Smart Sync. Cloud Disk allows you to access USB devices attached to the router, Smart Access gives you access to shared files on your local network, and Smart Sync offers you the ability to create a Dropbox-like service on your network.

Aesthetically pleasing exterior, 802.11n final compliance,
Only things which could make it better are gigabit Ethernet for the LAN ports and SMB/Windows and/or NFS filesharing in addition to the FTP server.
As the price of home networking equipment falls, manufacturers are looking to include features which separate their product from the rest of the pack. Many routers include at least one USB port these days because of this. This USB port is generally...
