The battle for the smartphone flagship supremacy rages on, as the best from Samsung and Apple look to be crowned as the best smartphone in the market today. The Samsung Galaxy S9 is the Android phone to beat but how does it fare with Apple’s top contender - the iPhone X? With both phones boasting top-of-the-line features and specifications, this is easily one of the closest phone matchups to date. To end the debate once and for all, let’s delve deeper to identify what both phones bring to the table:

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Specs, Review and Price - Solid, Speedy and Big-Screened Phone

When the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 launched it was a little bigger, slightly more colourful, a bit more powerful and pricier than prior Note phones, but be warned: it’s no longer the latest Note on the market. It’s been superseded by the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Plus, but if your budget can’t quite stretch to the new Note asking prices but still looking for an S Pen stylus with your smartphone, the Galaxy Note 9 is still a top handset.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has a sizable 6.4-inch AMOLED display, huge 4,000mAh battery and up to 512GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM. Slide in a 512GB microSD card, and you can get one of the first mainstream 1TB phones in your hands to save all your photos, videos, and music. That’s more space than a lot of the best laptops on the market.

S Pen Magic Tricks

The S Pen for the Galaxy Note 9 is capable of performing Bluetooth-connected magic tricks from up to 30 feet away. Samsung’s engineers managed to squeeze a small supercapacitor and tiny Bluetooth Low-Energy antenna into the otherwise unchanged stylus so that it can perform various remote functions. The best feature is being able to remotely launch the camera app with a long press of the S Pen button, flip the camera to selfie mode with a single short press, and snap a group photo with two clicks.

Samsung made the S Pen shortcuts customizable:

  • Camera: Flip the camera/ take a photo
  • Camera: Flip the camera/ record a video
  • Music Player: Play and pause music/ skip to the next track
  • Photo Gallery: Advance to the next photo/ cycle back to a previous photo
  • PowerPoint: Back and forth through presentation slides

The Ocean Blue Note 9 has the more dynamic yellow S Pen for a nice contrast. It writes in yellow digital ink, while the Lavender Purple phone has a purple pen and purple digital ink.

Massive Battery Capacity

The Note 9 battery capacity has been unshackled, hitting the 4,000mAh ceiling. This is the best Samsung phone you can buy when it comes to battery life. While there are two Note 9 storage configurations, the battery size, thankfully, is the same no matter which version you buy. You also get Fast Charging and Fast Wireless Charging capabilities.

Design and Display

Samsung’s Super AMOLED display doesn’t need to change much to look really great. It’s consistently the best smartphone screen in the world until the next Samsung phone launches - every year. The 6.4-inch Note 9 screen has grown by a tenth of an inch over the 6.3-inch Note 8 display, the nearly bezel-less Infinity Display is bright and punchy, and confirmed to be 27% brighter and with 32% more contrast ratio than the Note 8. The Note 9 is IP68 water-resistant and dust-proof, and that resistance rating stays the same whether or not the S Pen is embedded.

Camera

The Note 9’s rear camera is essentially the same 12-megapixel dual-lens shooter Samsung put in the Galaxy S9+, which means you can capture portraits with blurred backgrounds. The camera also sports a dual aperture, which can automatically open at either f/1.5 to f/2.4 for brighter low-light images or crisper shots, depending on your shooting conditions. But Samsung added artificial intelligence to Note 9’s camera software to set it apart from the other Galaxies, and it really made a difference.

Samsung isn’t the first company to make its camera smart - LG and Huawei flagships both have intelligence baked in for automatically configuring the camera settings depending on what you’re shooting. The Note 9 recognizes 20 scenes, including snow, sunsets, beaches and backlit subjects, and adjusts the contrast, brightness, saturation, white balance and other settings you’d normally have to manually configure in the camera’s Pro mode. You can turn off Scene Optimizer if you’d rather take photos without its intervention.

Did Samsung make a Note 9 Plus?

Yes, the Galaxy Note 9 actually has an even larger display but the S9 Plus has the slightly higher pixel density and screen-to-body ratio (AKA bezel size), so the Note 9 stands toe-to-toe with the S9 Plus.

How big is the Samsung Galaxy Note 9?

The Note 9 has a 6.4-inches 1440p Super AMOLED display with an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The design on the front is otherwise similar to the Note 8, using an Infinity Display.
