Samsung Galaxy S9 vs Apple iPhone X – Which Phone Will Prevail?04 April 2018
The battle for the smartphone flagship supremacy rages on, as the best from Samsung and Apple look to be crowned as the best smartphone in the market today. The Samsung Galaxy S9 is the Android phone to beat but how does it fare with Apple’s top contender - the iPhone X? With both phones boasting top-of-the-line features and specifications, this is easily one of the closest phone matchups to date. To end the debate once and for all, let’s delve deeper to identify what both phones bring to the table:
Samsung recently released three new flagships under the Galaxy S lineup: the S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra. As a group, the three Galaxy S20 models cover a solid range of size and price point, with an incredible amount of consistency both carried over from last year’s phones and between the three models. It’s typical Samsung execution through and through, with big improvements in camera technology, even better screens, and some new 5G networking for good measure.
In some ways, the Galaxy S20 Ultra looks a lot like Samsung phones that have preceded it - namely, the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10. The edges are curved, the display goes right up to the edge of the device, and there’s an Infinity-O hole-punch camera cutout up top. Sporting Samsung’s premium metal and glass build, the Galaxy S20 Ultra measures 166.9 x 76 x 8.8mm and weighs 220g. It’s well protected against the elements by virtue of IP68 water and dust resistance.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra features a massive 6.9-inch Quad HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 20:9 aspect ratio display. It’s a super smooth 120Hz panel. With a higher refresh rate, the screen is able to refresh content more dynamically. This results in smoother scrolling and animations. Fast-paced games also look much better because of the higher refresh rate. An ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor will be present as well and has been repositioned for greater accuracy.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra comes with a lot of tech that you won’t find in other models. However, one department where Samsung has maintained a level playing field is performance. The entire series, Ultra included, is running on the same Exynos 990 processor. Some variants for markets like the United States will have the Snapdragon 865 from Qualcomm instead. It’s offered in 12/16 RAM and 128/256GB storage variants.
This is where the Galaxy S20 Ultra really comes into its own element. The device gets a 108MP f/1.8 camera with OIS as its primary sensor. It’s coupled with a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide and a new 48MP f/3.5 telephoto sensor with OIS. A Time-of-Flight sensor completes the rear camera setup.
Samsung boasts 10x lossless zoom and 100x Space Zoom when both hybrid optic and digital zoom are combined. The camera setup is also capable of recording 8K videos at 30fps while the 40-megapixel front camera can record 4K video at 60fps.
The Galaxy S20 Ultra features a chunky 5,000mAh battery, the biggest on a Galaxy S smartphone. There’s support for 45W wired fast charging but it only comes with a 25W fast charger in the box. The Galaxy S20 Ultra comes with 5G support but Samsung has offered the LTE-only variant in selected markets.
What are the pros and cons of the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra?
- Powerful Performance
- Vibrant Display
