Xiaomi Mi 9 Specs and Review - Affordable with Lightning-Fast Performance

The Xiaomi Mi9 is a fantastic jack-of-all-trades device; it has a powerful processor, impressive camera setup, and supports up to 20W fast charging- and on top of that, it’s a whole load cheaper than phones with a similar spec.

Design

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is a really beautifully made piece of kit. It’s a slim, weighty metal frame covered entirely in glass. It has a gorgeous 6.3-inch AMOLED screen with a 90.7 per cent screen-to-body ratio. It’s only FHD+ (2340x1080) rather than Quad HD+ like some of the competition. Like the best Samsung phones, the display looks almost like a sticker and the notch is unobtrusive. It has a slightly curved glass back, giving it a distinct look. On the bottom of the device is a USB-C port, though no 3.5mm headphone jack- while the volume rocker and power button are on the right side, and there’s a Google Assistant button to the left.

Xiaomi is offering interesting gradient patterns with the Mi 9. The Ocean Blue and Lavender Violet colour options have a gradient effect that switches between various hues based on light reflecting off the glass, but if you’re not into that, there’s the standard Piano Black model.

Battery Life

Powering the Mi 9 is a 3,300mAh battery that supports 27W wired charging via USB-C and it supports 20W fast wireless charging. Out of the box, the device is bundled with an 18W charger. Xiaomi got on the wireless charging bandwagon last year, and it is already starting to pull ahead in this category. Mi 9 is the first phone to offer 20W wireless charging, facilitated by a charging mat Xiaomi launched alongside the phone. The charging mat provides a 40% charge from flat in 30 minutes, with a full charge taking just under 90 minutes.

Camera

The camera is one of the Xiaomi Mi 9’s key features, and it’s one of the strongest parts of the phone. On the back are 48MP f/1.75 wide-angle, 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide, and 12MP f/2.2 telephoto cameras, which combine to take fantastic pictures, and which are complemented by a collection of AI features to help you photograph. On the front, there’s a 20MP f/2.0 selfie camera, housed in the small ‘teardrop’ notch.

One of the strongest Mi 9 camera features is the depth sensing, courtesy of the 12MP telephoto lens. Quick to focus on subjects and accurately gauged depth to apply the correct amount of background blur, without selecting bokeh or beauty modes that the phone packs. Video is also good on the whole - capable of shooting up to 4K at 30fps, as well as stabilization, along with low noise and great low light performance.

Storage

The Mi 9 comes with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage as standard, and you’ll also be able to pick up a model with 128GB or 256GB of storage and 8GB of RAM. Like previous Mi flagships, the Mi 9 misses out on a MicroSD slot, but you do get a dual SIM card tray.

Movies, Music and Gaming

With its Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, the Xiaomi Mi 9 is a gaming powerhouse. High-end games run smoothly and it can handle demanding tasks. It goes without saying that navigating the UI and browsing the web was quick and responsive. Video playback is great with the Mi 9’s AMOLED display as it’s bright and has great contrast.

Is Xiaomi Mi 9 worth buying?

The Mi 9 once again shows that Xiaomi knows how to deliver on value. It is one of the most affordable devices powered by the Snapdragon 855, and that alone should be enough incentive to pick up the device. You also get a gorgeous AMOLED panel, a 48MP camera that gets the job done in most scenarios, and a battery that easily lasts a day.

Is Xiaomi Mi 9 waterproof?

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is not officially water-resistant and does not come with a certified IP rating. That said, it is draped in Corning Gorilla Glass 5 and 6; a toughened glass that provides an extra layer of safety, offering very mild resistance from water.

Which is the best Xiaomi phone?

If you’re looking for the best Xiaomi phone, you’re likely looking for a device with a low price tag but impressive specs, as that’s the kind of handset the company has gotten a reputation for putting out. Here are a few of the best Xiaomi phones in the market right now:

  1. Xiaomi Mi Note 10
  2. Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro
  3. Xiaomi Mi 9
  4. Xiaomi Mi 9 SE
  5. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3
  6. Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro
  7. Xiaomi Pocophone F1
  8. Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro
  9. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7
  10. Xiaomi Redmi 7A
