External hard disk drives or simply hard drives are storage devices that store your programs, settings, pictures, videos, documents, music, and anything else you keep on your computer. While hard disk drives come with a mechanical arm that reads/writes information, there are Solid State Drives (SSDs) that work similarly to USB memory sticks, making them much faster storage devices. But in terms of capacity, HDDs offer more storage space than SSDs. Aside from that, here are some advantages of HDDs over SSDs.
Generally, hard drives are more affordable than SSDs. They only cost two or five times less than SSDs with a similar storage capacity. As a comparison, one HDD with 1 TB capacity can go for 540 HK$ on most websites while 1 TB SSDs can go for 1,500 HK$ and can even go up to 2,500 HK$! So, if you want lots of storage for an affordable price, hard drives are definitely the way to go.
HDD’s mechanical components enable them to survive longer than SSDs. On the other hand, SSDs harness flash technology that offers a limited number of writes. Not to mention, they can only write any information by erasing and rewriting huge blocks of data first. For this reason, SSDs won’t be as efficient and reliable as HDDs in the long run.
Higher Storage Space
This is where HDDs boast a higher advantage over SSDs. Typically, HDDs come with a higher base storage capacity than SSDs. While there are SSDs that have similar storage capacities to HDDs, you won’t see a lot of them on the market. If you can find one, expect its price to be way more expensive than an HDD. Meanwhile, you can find a lot of external hard drives and computers with 500 GB base storage onboard. Some desktop computers and laptops with built-in HDDs even sport base storage capacities of 1 TB, making them more saleable than SSDs.
Finding One is Easy
Whether you want to upgrade your computer’s HDD or get an external hard disk drive, finding one isn’t going be that hard since there a lot of HDDs sold in the market. While there aren’t a lot of options for SSDs, recently, they’ve become increasingly popular but still they can’t compete with HDDs when it comes to availability.
All in all, if you need a lot of storage space for an affordable price, and don’t mind how fast your computer or laptop opens applications, then it’s best to get a hard drive.
