Am I Black Enough for You?
HK$ 203.00
The Co-op
''I'm Aboriginal. I'm just not the Aboriginal person a lot of people want or expect me to be.'' What does it mean to be Aboriginal? Why is Australia so obsessed with notions of identity? Anita Heiss; successful author and passionate campaigner for Aboriginal literacy; was born a member of the Wiradjuri nation of central New South Wales; but was raised in the suburbs of Sydney and educated at the local Catholic school. She is Aboriginal - however; this does not mean she likes to go barefoot and; please; don't ask her to camp in the desert. After years of stereotyping Aboriginal Australians as either settlement dwellers or rioters in Redfern; the Australian media have discovered a new crime to charge them with: being too 'fair-skinned' to be real Aborigines. Such accusations led to Anita's involvement in one of the most important and sensational Australian legal decisions of the 21st-century when she joined others in charging a newspaper columnist with breaching the Racial Discrimination Act. He was found guilty; and the repercussions continue. In this deeply personal memoir; told in her distinctive; wry style; Anita Heiss gives a first-hand account of her experiences as a woman with an Aboriginal mother and Austrian father; and explains the development of her activist consciousness. Read her story and ask: what does it take for someone to be black enough for you? \\Author Biography: Anita is a writer; poet; activist; social commentator and academic. She is the author of Yirra and her Deadly Dog; Demon; I'm Not Racist; But... ; My Story: The Diary of Mary Talence; Sydney 1937; and a series of chick lit novels including Not Meeting Mr Right and Paris Dreaming. Her work has been shortlisted for the NSW Premier's Literary Awards Young People's History Prize and she has won the DEADLY award for writing a number of times. She is a member of the Wiradjuri nation of central New South Wales; but grew up in Matraville; Sydney. Anita describes herself as a concrete Koori with a Westfield dreaming - a city chick whose idea of Survivor is a night in a caravan. Awards: VIC Premiers Awards for Indigenous Writing

Digital Design and Computer Architecture Second Edition David Money Harris and Sarah L. Harris ''Harris and Harris have taken the popular pedagogy from Computer Organization and Design down to the next level of refinement; showing in detail how to build a MIPS microprocessor in both Verilog and VHDL. Given the exciting opportunity that students have to run large digital designs on modern FGPAs; the approach the authors take in this book is both informative and enlightening.'' -David A. Patterson; University of California at Berkeley; Co-author of Computer Organization and Design Digital Design and Computer Architecture takes a unique and modern approach to digital design. Beginning with digital logic gates and progressing to the design of combinational and sequential circuits; Harris and Harris use these fundamental building blocks as the basis for what follows: the design of an actual MIPS processor. SystemVerilog and VHDL are integrated throughout the text in examples illustrating the methods and techniques for CAD-based circuit design. By the end of this book; readers will be able to build their own microprocessor and will have a top-to-bottom understanding of how it works. Harris and Harris have combined an engaging and humorous writing style with an updated and hands-on approach to digital design. This second edition has been updated with new content on I/O systems in the context of general purpose processors found in a PC as well as microcontrollers found almost everywhere. The new edition provides practical examples of how to interface with peripherals using RS232; SPI; motor control; interrupts; wireless; and analog-to-digital conversion. High-level descriptions of I/O interfaces found in PCs include USB; SDRAM; WiFi; PCI Express; and others. In addition to expanded and updated material throughout; SystemVerilog is now featured in the programming and code examples (replacing Verilog); alongside VHDL. This new edition also provides additional exercises and a new appendix on C programming to strengthen the connection between programming and processor architecture. SECOND Edition Features Covers the fundamentals of digital logic design and reinforces logic concepts through the design of a MIPS microprocessor. Features side-by-side examples of the two most prominent Hardware Description Languages (HDLs)-SystemVerilog and VHDL-which illustrate and compare the ways each can be used in the design of digital systems. Includes examples throughout the text that enhance the reader’s understanding and retention of key concepts and techniques. Companion Web site includes links to CAD tools for FPGA design from Altera and Mentor Graphics; lecture slides; laboratory projects; and solutions to exercises. 160 pagine Hardcover 2006 Inglese

Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks at 203.00 HKD from The Co-op
Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks
HK$ 203.00
The Co-op
Her name was Henrietta Lacks; but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors; yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - become one of the most important tools in modern medicine. Taken in 1951; these cells became the first immortal human cell line ever grown in culture. They were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered the secrets of cancer; viruses and the effects of the atom bomb; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilisation; cloning; and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Put together; her cells would now weigh more than 22 million tons and placed end-to-end would wrap around the earth five times. Now Rebecca Skloot takes us on an extraordinary journey; from the "coloured" wards of Johns Hopkins in the 1950s to poverty stricken tenements of East Baltimore today; where Henrietta's children are unable to afford health insurance; and struggle with feelings of pride; fear and betrayal. Their story is inextricably linked to the birth of bioethics; the rise of multi-billion dollar biotech industry; and the legal battles that determine if we own our bodies. Intimate in feeling; astonishing in scope; and impossible to put down; The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery; as well as its human consequences.\Prizes: Winner of Wellcome Trust Book Prize 2010.\Author Biography: Rebecca Skloot is an award-winning science writer whose articles have appeared in the New York Times Magazine; O; The Oprah Magazine; Discover; Columbia Journalism Review; and elsewhere. She has also worked as a correspondent for National Public Radio and PBS.

Books have always been viewed as one of the most traditional and reliable sources of knowledge. Many people in this modern day and age may use the Internet as a source of knowledge and a learning point to learn and understand many new things, but in the past where the Internet was not such a prominent thing, books  were the go-to source instead. However, not all books are a source of knowledge, they are also mediums in which we can derive entertainment from as well.

Forms of books were made ever since the first civilization could write in their own language (in characters or glyphs). Mediums such as scrolls or manuscripts were many of the world's first forms of books. Today books come in several printed forms, such as paperbacks or hardcovers – there are also digital e-books today.

Here are some of the different types of the books published in today's world:

Novels

Novels are a specific type of books whose primary objective is to tell a story to the reader, a narrative. Novels usually carry fictional stories that may come from a variety of genres. Novel-type books mainly serve as an entertainment of sorts for the reader. Popular genres of novels today: romance, science-fiction, horror, thriller.

Some authors may write novels about a single character with many different adventures such as Harry Potter, or the story may be part of a larger universe on a whole such as the stories written for the Star Wars franchise.

Biographies

A biography is a written and detailed description of a person's life. It may be written to cover selected parts of a person's life, but it is mostly written to describe a person's entire life (or most of it). Unlike the general understanding that a biography contains only the data of the person such as their names and birthplace, a  biography is a retelling of a persons life in book form for people to read. Because it is a description of a person's life, biographies are non-fiction.

An autobiography is a biography that is written by the person themselves who wishes to share the world; whereas an authorized biography is one that is written with the permission and cooperation of the participating person.

Photobooks

Photobooks are pretty self explanatory, they are basically books which contain high quality photographs that are printed into the pages. These photos feature idols and artists, both male and female, in amny different poses and costumes or outfits. Although photobooks contain mainly photos, there are also shorter bits of texts that act as descriptions. A short paragraph that serves as an introduction is also commonly present in the book.

E-Books

E-books are not a type of book genre, but it is more of a physical form of a book that has been on the rise in recent years. E-books are basically digital books that are downloaded and read through the use of an e-book reader, a slim tablet-like device with e-ink paper displays which look like real paper.

E-books (and its readers) are good for the environment in the long term because it reduces the use of paper, and it is also convenient to use as it is able to carry a large number of books in its slim size. It also has lower costs than buying a printed book, but it loses on the feel of the paper which avid readers prefer.
