Not to be confused with living sea creatures, sponges, either made from synthetic or natural fibers, are a great household item. Mainly used for cleaning surfaces, sponges absorb water and disperse cleaning soaps efficiently. The best thing about sponges is that there are more than just one type. Believe it or not, there are 5 types of sponges that you can use in your home.
Present in most households today, cellulose sponges are the most common type of sponge on this list. Cellulose sponges are inexpensive and can absorb water easily which makes it ideal for cleaning. Cellulose sponges are made from wood pulp and are often highly porous. While cellulose sponges are great for cleaning dishes, because of its porous qualities, it can trap food particles and can harbor bacteria easily.
Natural sponges are types of sponges harvested from the ocean floors and are eco-friendly. Though they are not as common as cellulose sponges, natural sponges are great for washing windows and cars because of their soft and highly absorbent characteristic. Compared to cellulose sponges, however, natural sponges are less porous and are great for washing dishes. As great as they sound, they are more expensive than regular cellulose sponges.
Otherwise known as chemical sponges, dry sponges are great for surfaces that cannot tolerate water such as lampshades, wallpaper, fabric window covers, and fabric car seats. Dry sponges are made from vulcanized natural rubber which can absorb a great deal of soot and dirt. One set back of dry sponges is that they have the tendency to dry and harden if not stored and sealed properly.
If you are looking for a flexible type of sponge that you can use on any surface, microfiber sponges might be something you would be interested in. Microfiber sponges can be used to clean almost any type of surface without using harmful chemicals such as bleach. This type of sponge combines the absorbency of traditional cellulose sponge with chemical-free microfiber. As great as microfiber sounds, it doesn't come without cons. Microfiber is less effective on chunkier and caked-on debris like mud due to its less abrasive qualities.
Like cellulose sponges, abrasive sponges are also among the most common type of sponges you can find. Available in the nearest supermarkets and hardware, abrasive sponges have a tough texture which is effective against grittier forms of debris. While abrasive sponges can be bought separately, you can also grab abrasive sponges together with a cellulose sponge. This combination is often used in kitchens with the abrasive side used on tough food stains while the cellulose side for water absorption and dispersing soap. However, if you are washing expensive china, dinnerware or other delicate items, avoid using abrasive sponges. Its rough texture could potentially damage these items.
