Kam & Ronson Enterprises Co Ltd Sacrifice (Blu-ray) (Hong Kong Version)
HK$ 187.00
YesAsia
Two years after the elegant biopic Forever Enthralled, Farewell My Concubine director Chen Kaige takes on an epic story that has been dubbed the Chinese Hamlet. Sacrifice is based on the Yuan Dynasty play The Orphan of Zhao, which has been reinterpreted multiple times in the west as The Orphan of China. Bringing the story back to China, Chen has made slight changes to his own take on this tale of unspeakable sacrifice and revenge with scenes of spectacle, but he also retains the power of the story by maintaining an intimate focus on its key characters. One of China's most popular actors, Ge You leads a star-studded cast as a doctor who rescues the lone survivor of a massacre at the price of his own family for the sake of revenge. Also joining him are Wang Xueqi (Bodyguards and Assassins), Huang Xiaoming (The Message), Fan Bingbing (Lost in Beijing), and Zhang Fengyi (Red Cliff). Released in the intensely competitive year-end period in 2010, Sacrifice became one of the highest-grossing films of 2010 in China and one of Chen's most commercially successful films. Jealous of the accomplishments of the Zhao family in the court of Duke Ling, General Tuan (Wang Xueqi) sets off an elaborate plan that leads to the massacre of the Zhao family. Before committing suicide, General Zhao's wife Zhuang (Fan Bingbing) asks family doctor Cheng Ying (Ge You) to help give birth to her son and take him to family friend Gong (Zhang Fengyi). With the help of Han Jue (Huang Xiaoming), Cheng Ying is able to take the baby to temporary safety. However, when Tuan manages to track Cheng Ying down, Cheng Ying convinces his wife to switch his own child with the Zhao baby to protect the bloodline, leading to the death of his family. Raising the Zhao child under Tuan's nose, Cheng Ying carefully plans his revenge...

Their messy divorce results in a battle over the custody of their daughter. The judge (Elena Kong) dictates that they vow to abstain from gambling for one week, and whoever breaks the agreement first will lose their daughter! Co-starring Law Kar Ying, Mimi Chu, Hui Siu Hung, Harriet Yeung, and Stephen Chow impersonator Wen Chao, Mr. & Mrs. Gambler hits a royal flush with its lucky hand of romance, gambling, and hilarious hijinks. "Sunny, yesterday my life was filled with rain..." Bringing in over seven million admissions at the box office, nostalgic blockbuster Sunny is Korea's feel-good hit of the year. Jumping between the roaring eighties and the present-day, the crowd-pleasing film follows the friendship of seven girls, then and now. Shim Eun Kyung (Romantic Heaven), Kang So Ra (4th Period Mystery), and Min Hyo Rin (Romance Town) lead the teenage rebellion as feisty, troublemaking schoolgirls whose high school brawling days cross over with the democracy protests of the eighties. Coming of age amid pop tunes, sunny times, and fearless friendship, what lives await yesterday's reckless dreamers when they meet again as adults? Winning Best Director at the Daejong Film Awards with just his second film, writer-director Kang Hyung Chul follows Speedy Scandal with another critically acclaimed smash hit that connects with audiences of all ages. The picture of beauty and composure, forty-something mother and wife Na Mi (Yoo Ho Jung) seems to have achieved the ideal life. One day, she bumps into her old high school friend Chun Hwa (Jin Hee Kyung), who is hospitalized with terminal cancer but still as sassy as ever. They reminisce about their high school days together 25 years ago. Back then, Na Mi (Shim Eun Kyung) was the quirky, small-town girl who just moved to Seoul, and Chun Hwa (Kang So Ra) was the tough fighter who welcomed her into the "Sunny" crew. Along with chubby Jang Mi (Kim Min Young), foul-mouthed Jin Hee (Park Jin Joo), bookish Geum Ok (Nam Bo Ra), Miss Korea wannabe Bok Hee (Kim Bo Mi), and arrogant beauty Su Ji (Min Hyo Rin), the girls picked fights with rival cliques and danced their teenage hearts away. They vowed to be friends forever, but adolescent breakdowns and the advent of adulthood would send them all down different roads. As Chun Hwa's health worsens, Na Mi sets out to round up the Sunny crew for one more dance.

Inspired by a real-life case, the film To Be Number One follows the rise and fall of one of the most powerful drug dealers in Hong Kong history. In the vein of the American classic Godfather, the film won the Best Picture and Best Screenplay awards at the 1991 Hong Kong Film Awards as a proof of its high quality. Ray Lui brings to life an ambitious, calculating, and arrogant crime boss whose innate qualities have almost determined his fate. The cast also includes veterans such as Kent Cheng and Kenneth Tsang, and also the beautiful Cecilia Yip and sexy Amy Yip. With an engaging story and meticulous depiction of characters, To Be Number One is a must-see among Hong Kong crime action movies. Newly immigrated to Hong Kong, Ho (Ray Liu) joins a triad gang lead by Fat Ball (Kent Cheng) and he is so smart that Fat Ball soon feels threatened. He therefore plots against Ho, but the plan only turns Ho into a cripple. After that, Ho decides to beat Fat Ball at any cost, and he eventually puts him in jail. One of the most popular hits in Johnnie To's extraordinary filmography, Running Out of Time (1999) undoubtedly set the benchmark in Hong Kong crime capers. It was followed two years later by an even more slickly produced sequel co-directed by To and his disciple Law Wing Cheong, who would go on to become a brilliant director in his own right. Lau Ching Wan reprises his role as a persistent policeman to face off against another righteous robber, this time played by Ekin Cheng. Co-starring Kelly Lin, Hui Siu Hung, Lam Suet, and Ruby Wong, the tight-paced action thriller sequel won Best Film Editing and Best Action Choreography at the 39th Golden Horse Awards. In Running Out of Time 2, police senior inspector Ho Sheung Sang (Lau Ching Wan) is challenged to a game of cat-and-mouse by a mysterious thief (Ekin Cheng), who has hatched an elaborate plan to extort a king's ransom out of insurance company executive Teresa (Kelly Lin). The elusive thief always manages to stay one step ahead thanks to his bottomless bag of magic tricks, and in order to catch him, Ho must figure out his next move - and the motive behind his game.

Andy Lau delivers a powerhouse performance, and director-writer Wong Jing delivers an emotionally complex story. In this bold take on the triad genre, a good man must regain his self-respect by rising up against the same triad underworld that nearly destroyed him. Hong Kong director Herman Yau contributes to the centennial celebration of the Xinhai Revolution with his period kung fu biopic about late-Qing feminist and revolutionary Qiu Jin, whose heroic exploits were pivotal in bringing about the eventual downfall of the imperial regime in China. The maverick director of The Untold Story has long admired the legendary figure, and his entertaining portrayal of her life story on the silver screen admirably balances the historical drama stuff with exhilarating action scenes choreographed by veteran action director Leung Siu Hung (Ip Man). Yau brings back his The Legend is Born - Ip Man star Crystal Huang in the eponymous role, supported by a star-studded cast including Dennis To, Anthony Wong, Kevin Cheng, Rose Chan, Pat Ha, Lam Suet, Xiong Xinxin, Tsui Tin Yau, Wong Yau Nam, and Lollipop-F's A-wei. When the women of her time had their feet bound to please men, Qiu Jin (Crystal Huang) was already questioning the sexual inequality of feudal traditions. Free-spirited and well-educated, she grew up practicing martial arts and was as well versed in poetry as she was in sword-fighting. When this rebellious girl moved to Beijing with her husband (Kevin Cheng), she witnessed how her country was raided and ravaged by foreign powers. With the encouragement of her neighbor Wu Zhiying (Pat Ha), the wife of righteous magistrate Li Zhongyue (Anthony Wong), Qiu Jin left her family behind to pursue study in Japan. There, she met some like-minded schoolmates who shared her ideals, including revolutionary leader Xu Xilin (Dennis To), and secretly joined his anti-Qing cause. After returning to China, Qiu Jin participated in the uprisings staged by Xu Xilin, leading a small group of hot-blooded students against the armed forces of the corrupt Qing government...

Eighteen years after the classic Hong Kong comedy The Eagle Shooting Heroes, writer-director Jeff Lau returns with his latest fantasy comedy romp featuring an all-star cast. This time, Lau doesn't repeat his spoof of Wong Kar Wai's artsy wuxia, but comes up with a brand-new genre mashup filled with colorful characters inspired by Buddhist deities, his beloved brand of transcending romance, and loads of quotable lines and crazy, good old-fashioned "mo lei tau" gags. In a bid to surpass its unforgettable predecessor, East Meets West even lines up as many as 60 famous pop singers and actors, including Eason Chan, Ekin Cheng, Karen Mok, Stephy Tang, William So, Tan Weiwei, Jaycee Chan, Crystal Huang, Kenny Bee, and many more. Tens of millennia ago, eight gods who ceaselessly fought each other were exiled to earth. For generations, they have been reincarnated as mere mortals, and they won't be allowed back to heaven until they've learned to coexist in harmony. Then in today's Hong Kong, a mortuary beautician (Karen Mok) and her has-been singer dad (Kenny Bee) are chased for a huge sum of money they don't owe. Turns out her materialistic stepmom (Crystal Huang) has taken a tycoon's (Eason Chan) advance payment on the false promise of organizing a concert that she can't deliver. The family is therefore forced to go on the run, and along the way they meet an assortment of quirky people, including a mute baker (Ekin Cheng), a kung fu cab driver (William So), an aspiring musician (Tan Weiwei) and her crafty sidekick (Jaycee Chan). Through a series of comic misadventures, the seven of them come to realize that they used to be gods and have a mission in this life, but...who is the eighth god that has yet to rejoin them? The Hong Kong Version Blu-ray comes with making-of and trailers.

Before becoming Hong Kong's number one auteur, Johnnie To directed The Eighth Happiness, a raucous Lunar New Year Comedy starring the one-and-only Chow Yun Fat! Chow stars as one of three oddball brothers looking for love...but unfortunately, their out-there personalities only get in the way! Eldest brother Raymond Wong Bak Ming runs a cooking show for women, and ends up tangling with a Chinese opera singer ( Fung Bo Bo) who makes a guest appearance on his show. His youngest brother Jacky Cheung is a shy cartoonist who falls in love with a sweet girl (Fennie Yuen), but to obtain her love, he must surpass a manly rival (Michael Chow), as well as interference from his own two brothers. But the big story here is Chow Yun Fat, who turns in a surprising comic performance as a renowned player - whose mode of operation is to act gay in order to attract women! One of his targets is a beautiful but insane department store shopgirl played by Cherie Chung, who steals almost all her scenes. But it's not until Chow meets feisty Carol "Dodo" Cheng that the man truly meets his match. The stories and relationships between the three couples intertwine hilariously, leading up to a onstage spoof of Princess Chang Ping, featuring Chow Yun Fat dressed up in drag! A monster hit during its initial release, The Eighth Happiness moves fast and furiously, and features enough off-the-wall performances, hilarious situations, surprising jokes (look out for Chow Yun Fat's cameo as "Mark Gor" from A Better Tomorrow) and sheer comic energy to entertain just about anyone!

First-time director Cheng Wei Hao scored a major hit with the atmospheric horror film The Tag-Along. The film draws its inspiration from an unsettling 1998 incident involving a mysterious little girl dressed in red who was caught on video following a group of hikers in the mountains. Called mosien, these creeping spirits are forest-dwelling ghosts that take the form of small children or monkeys, and prey upon a person's hidden guilt and fears. The highest-grossing Taiwan horror film in over a decade, The Tag-Along offers more than scares. Cheng Wei Hao touches upon themes of love, duty, family and the environment while telling a terrifying and uniquely haunting tale. Always-busy real estate agent Wei (Huang He) finds his life upended when his grandmother is taken by the demonic mosien and spirited away to the mountains. In investigating her disappearance, Wei discovers that he's left behind broken promises and dreams in his path to adulthood and his growing fear and guilt impel the mosien to make him their next victim. With Wei taken, his girlfriend Yi Chun (Tiffany Hsu) finds herself next in line. To solve the riddle of the mosien and save Wei from a dark fate, Yi Chun must confront her fears as well as the hidden secrets that threaten to derail her life.

Liu Ye, Zhang Hanyu and Huang Bo are the eponymous heroes of The Chef, The Actor, The Scoundrel, a wartime comedy-drama from director Guan Hu (Cow). Set during the Sino-Japanese War in a Beijing ravaged by war, famine and plague, the film takes place mostly in an inn with four everyday folks and their two Japanese captives. The entertaining, shape-shifting story of comedy and espionage gradually reveals a labyrinthine battle of wits and masquerade among various parties with divergent motives and secrets. A desperate Scoundrel (Huang Bo) tries to rob two Japanese travelers, but a Chef (Liu Ye) captures them first and holds them hostage in his Japanese restaurant. The Chef, his mute wife (Liang Jing, Design of Death), the Scoundrel and a rakish opera Actor (Zhang Hanyu) who works at the restaurant argue over what to do with the captives. When they learn the captives are actually scientists who have developed a vaccine for cholera, they agree to steal the vaccine formula and then sell it off for big money. Making the scientists spill their secrets, however, is easier said than done, especially when they also have to hide the captives from the Japanese army and some suspicious detectives. Meanwhile, the Chef, the Actor and the Scoundrel also may not be who they appear to be.

After releasing successive tearjerkers in The Allure of Tears and The Stolen Years, Barbara Wong returns to more lighthearted fare in the 2014 dramedy Girls. Starring Ivy Chen (Hear Me), Yang Zishan (So Young) and Fiona Sit (Break Up Club) as the trio of female friends at the center of the story, the film grossed over US$32 million and is Barbara Wong's most commercially successful movie to date. Gentle hotel manager Xiwen (Ivy Chen), pragmatic assistant film director Xiaomei (Yang Zishan) and domineering magazine executive Kimmy (Fiona Sit) have been friends for almost two decades, but the bonds of their friendship are severely tested by the dawning of adulthood and the romantic obstacles it comes with. The trouble starts when Xiwen discovers that her fiance Lin Jie (Wallace Chung, Fall In Love) has been cheating on her. Devastated, she goes drinking in a bid to drown her sorrows and meets the gentlemanly Qiao Li (Shawn Yue, As The Light Goes Out), with whom Xiwen develops a friendship that may lead to something more. Meanwhile, Xiaomei finds herself irresistibly drawn to freewheeling musician Jiu Tian (Vanness Wu, Road Less Traveled), but the fact that Kimmy is also interested in him threatens to tear the girls apart. He was many things to many people - a dashing warrior king, filled with ambition, courage and the arrogance of youth, leading his vastly outnumbered forces against the massive Persian armies... a son desperately longing for the approval of his stern, battle-scarred father, torn and conflicted by his mother's legacy... a relentless conqueror who never lost a battle and drove his soldiers to the very edges of the Known World... a visionary whose dreams, deeds and destiny echo through eternity, helping to shape the face of the world as we know it today. He was all that and more. He was Alexander the Great. Oliver Stone's Alexander is based on the true story of one of history's most luminous and influential leaders (Colin Farrell) - a man who had conquered 90% of the known world by the age of 25. Alexander led his virtually invincible Greek and Macedonian armies through 22,000 miles of sieges and conquests in just eight years, and by the time of his death at the age of 32 had forged an empire unlike any the world had ever seen. The film takes a bold, honest look at Alexander's life and his relationships with his mother, Olympias (Angelina Jolie), his father Philip (Val Kilmer), his lifelong friend and battle commander Hephaistion (Jared Leto), Roxane, his ambitious and beautiful Bactrian wife (Rosario Dawson), and his trusted general and confidant Ptolemy (Anthony Hopkins). Set in Alexander's pre-Christian world of social customs and morals far different from today's, the film explores a time of unmatched beauty and unbelievable brutality, of soaring ideals and staggering betrayals. This edition also comes with special features such as the making-of, interviews, trailers, etc.

Adapted from a novel by the famous Japanese writer Edogawa Rampo, Face to Face (a.k.a. The Snow) is a Hong Kong-Japan co-production featuring Tanihara Shosuke and Ito Misaki from Japan and also Hong Kong actor Stephen Fung. Director Casey Chan, a collaborator with Stephen Fung since The Poet, changes the setting of the story from Kyushu in southern Japan to the far North where the land is covered by snow. A lethargic and vast landscape better suits the film's eerie atmosphere by contrasting shocking scenes against the quiet winter. Stephen Fung portrays a student born into a rich Chinese family in Japan. His best friend, a talented but poor Japanese student (Tanihara Shosuke), lives with him in his house. One day they meet a gorgeous girl (Ito Misaki) and both fall in love with her. The rich Chinese young man, soon after becoming her husband, dies in a skiing accident... A thrilling film filled with horror - and the dark side of human nature may the most horrible of all!

International martial arts superstar Jet Li stars in Black Mask, a stylish neo-future actioner about a former assassin who dons a mask to fight crime. Jet Li is Tsui, who seems to be nothing more than a bookish librarian. His pal, Inspector Shek (Sean Lau Ching Wan), thinks Tsui is a wimp and needs to learn to stand up for himself. But Shek doesn't know the truth: Tsui was once in a group of genetically-engineered assassins called Squad 701. Tsui would have no problem wiping the floor with Shek, but Tsui is content to quietly go about his life, learning to be human, and sometimes fighting off the advances of wacky co-worker Tracey (Karen Mok). But when all of the drug dealers in Hong Kong begin to get mysteriously killed, it becomes apparent that Squad 701 has something to do with it. Tsui's former pupil (sexy Francoise Yip) shows up in town to take down Tsui, who has no choice but to fight back and reveal himself as...the Black Mask! Yuen Woo Ping (The Matrix) choreographed the action for Black Mask, which are staged with violent, acrobatic energy and bullets-blazing flair! Producer Tsui Hark and director Daniel Lee (A Fighter's Blues) pull out all the stops for Black Mask, an entertaining Hong Kong hit with cool style and even cooler action sequences!

Jet Li tries something new with Hitman, an action comedy with a surprisingly charming performance from the action superstar! Fu (Jet Li) is an ex-soldier whose honesty and goodness is a little unusual for someone so adept at acrobatic kung-fu fighting. When a low-rent triad (Eric Tsang) discovers Fu's fighting prowess, he entreats the gentle tough guy to help him score a 100 million dollar bounty placed on the "King of Assassins," who just offed a high-ranking Japanese crimelord. But with such a large sum of cash up for grabs, hitmen of all shapes and sizes appear out of the woodwork to claim the reward for themselves! Factoring into the mess are Simon Yam as a dapper cop assigned to chase the multiplying hitmen, and cute Gigi Leung as Jet Li's adorable love interest. Director Stephen Tung intercuts the laughs with finely-choreographed action sequences, and the ace Hong Kong stars provide necessary charm and charisma. Hitman is a decidedly different, and wildly entertaining action comedy!

Stephen Fung, Cherrie Ying, and Tang Yifei are trapped in the nightmarish world of Virtual Recall! Based on the best-selling novel "Symbiosis" by Lam Wing Sum (writer of Magic Kitchen's original novel), the film from director Cheung Hoi Ching (Devil's Vindata) is a psychological thriller with an eclectic mix of mystery, romance, and the scientific concept of the parallel universes. Besides Stephen and Cherrie, the incredible universe of Virtual Recall is also populated by fellow Hong Kong actors such as Sammul Chan, Samuel Pang, Mandy Chiang, Tin Kai Man, and Simon Lui. Fortunately, it doesn't take an Einstein to make sense of the plots. Psychiatrist Dr. Xiao Tingqin (Tang Yifei) has taken in a mental patient named Shen Liushuang (Cherrie Ying), a beautiful woman who claims to have special powers. In her treatment of Liushuang, Tingqin begins to encounter a series of inexplicable happenings. Meanwhile, Tingqin's marriage with senior cop Zhen Shanlin (Stephen Fung) is on the rocks when she finds out about his affair, which somehow is connected with the mysterious killer hot in her pursuit. As Tingqin finds herself fallen under the control of Liushuang, the only way to break free from her endless nightmares is to escape through the "wormhole" into an alternate reality!
