The Different Types of Kitchen Strainers You Should Know About

Kitchen strainers in the Hong Kong come in various forms, material, and uses. To get the most out of your strainer, you should know what it is designed for. To guide you accordingly, here are the many different types of kitchen strainers and their uses.

Food Strainer

A food strainer can be found in almost every kitchen. There are 4 types of food strainers out there.

Colander

Most people mistook colanders as strainers, but there’s a difference: colander has bigger holes, unlike strainers, and is what most kitchens have. It typically used in preparing pasta, vegetables, and potatoes. vegetable strainers are also colanders and are used for the same purpose.

Metal Strainers

Metal strainers usually have small holes and have the same uses as colanders. They are great for separating pulp from fruits like oranges and vegetables. They are also used for making tomato sauce just by dropping blanched tomatoes into the strainer and pressing them with a large spoon to squeeze all the juice out of them. The same procedure is done when making a jam using berries. Without a strainer, you’ll be having a hard time separating their seeds and skins from their liquid. Also, if you don’t like lemon seeds getting in your drink, with just a simple squeeze of the strainer, the seeds will be filtered and all that goes into your cup are lemon juice.

Food mills

Although a bit pricier than colanders and metal strainers, food mills are proven effective in making jams and juices. They have a wooden or metal crank handle that pushes the food through disks to grind them and holes to drain out the liquid. Using a food mill is efficient, though it’s difficult to carry around because it’s heavy.

Electric Strainer

If you want to make large batches of jam and sauce, then electric strainers are your best bet. They function like food mills but the difference is that they have a motor that processes the food that you put in them. For this reason, they are widely used in restaurants since they are faster, more efficient, and offer a bigger capacity than other types.

Sink Strainers

This type of strainer is not used for preparing food but for filtering out debris in kitchens. They are not only used in kitchens but also in industrial and irrigational applications. There are three types of sink strainers, each has its own effectiveness in separating out food particles from going down the drain.

Regular sink strainers

These can either be round or triangular in shape. They have large perforations, making the flow of water faster to the drain. Conversely, they will not be able to filter out smaller food debris since they will run down the drain.

Basket sink strainers

As their name suggest, they have a detachable basket that will allow you to throw filtered food debris with ease. This makes them easy to clean. They also have small holes that provide a more straining surface that improves the filtration of solid substance from liquids, making sure that only water flows into the drain.

Mesh Sink Strainers

If you want a sink strainer that can capture small debris, then mesh sink strainers are a sure way for straining them out. They are usually made from steel and have net-like perforations that will guarantee to trap oil particles and tiny food particles from clogging your drain.
