With a product line that covers PCs, tablet computers, smartphones, workstations, servers, electronic storage devices, IT management software, and smart televisions, Lenovo has its close competitors on their toes with technological innovation and unit sales. Being a Chinese multinational computer technology company, with headquarters in Beijing and Morrisville, Lenovo Group Ltd. operates in more than 60 countries and has its business in 160 countries.
Founded in Beijing in 1984 under the company name of Legend and having incorporated in Hong Kong in 1988, the ten engineers began the company with the carried meaning of the traditional Chinese phrase, ‘lianxiang’ which means association or connected thinking. They also wanted it to imply creativity. The first 20 years of the company carried the English name ‘Legend’ but Yang Yuanqing, one of the engineers, decided to rebrand it in course of international expansion. This is due to the fact that the name, ‘Legend’ has already been used by a number of businesses worldwide. Subsequently, in 2003, the new name, ‘Lenovo’ was publicly announced. That is how a legendary brand is born, not with the word "Legend" but with the legendary brand name that is known as "Lenovo".
Lenovo emerged into and within the market through its particular strategic approach. Being the first personal computer manufacturer to divide countries into emerging markets and mature markets and having specific set of strategies for each category. Even its competitors are slowly adapting a similar approach.
In China, Lenovo’s vast distribution network was designed so that there is at least one shop selling Lenovo products within a perimeter of 50 kilometres of consumers. In India, through bulk orders to large companies and government agencies, Lenovo gained significant market share. Lenovo’s first business in South Africa started off by establishing a sales office and then expanded to East Africa and then into West Africa. As said by Lenovo’s general manager for Africa, “Lenovo’s strategy is to put great emphasis on products that sell well in Africa and roll out products alongside different Africa government’s rolling out wireless technology. In the United States, beginning with a marketing campaign that sounded, ‘For Those Who Do’, Lenovo stressed appeal to young consumers of the age 18-25 years old, catering utilities to creative individuals that are referred to as, ‘doers’.
Through the acquisition of IBM’s personal computer business in 2005 that included the ThinkPad and ThinkCenter lines, Lenovo’s business and market presence expanded greatly. Since then, Lenovo’s profit margin rose to be more than 5% due to the doubling of the THINK-branded computers. Furthermore, due to aggressive expansion of the THINK brand, Lenovo innovated itself away from traditional laptop computers to hybrid devices such as the ThinkPad Tablet 2, ThinkPad Yoga, ThinkPad 8, ThinkPad Helix, and ThinkPad Twist.
Lenovo’s ThinkPad series is a collection of laptop computers renowned for their boxy black design of which was modelled after traditional Japanese lunchboxes. Originally an IBM product, the renewed ThinkPads have been officially certified for the use on the International Space Station. The series consists of ThinkPad E and Edge series, T series, W series, X series, and the Yoga series.
The ThinkCentre series focuses on business-oriented desktop computers which was introduced originally by IBM and then reproduced and sold by Lenovo. The line-up boasts mid-range to high-end processors, discrete graphic cards of choice, and multi-monitor support. The line-up compromises of the M series Tiny, E and Edge series Towers, and the E and Edge series All-In-Ones.
Lenovo’s ThinkServer line-up began with the TS100 of which was developed with IBM to produce single-socket and dual-socket servers based on IBM’s xSeries technology. The additional feature of the design of the server was a support package for small businesses of which provides software tools to ease server management and reduce dependency on IT support.
The ThinkStation series compromises workstations for high-end computing. The first of its series was the ThinkStation S10 model.
Lenovo’s ThinkVision displays are marketed high-end monitors. During the commencement of the 2014 Internation CES, Lenovo announced the ThinkVision Pro2840m—a 28-inch 4K display aimed at professionals. On the same note, Lenovo announced another 28-inch 4K touch-enabled, Android-running device that can function as an all-in-one PC or an external display for other devices.
The IdeaPad line-up focuses on consumer-oriented laptop computers. Introduced in January 2008, the line-up differs from ThinkPads as it has a more consumer-focused look and feel. With its IdeaPad Yoga 13 that could converted into a tablet by simply flipping the screen all the way backwards and the Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro that boasts as an Ultrabook-class convertible device that is interchangeable between a tablet and a laptop computer, Lenovo packs a strong punch in the world of tablet-laptop hybrids.
All of Lenovo’s IdeaCentres are all-in-one machines that combine processor and monitor into a single unit. Being described as ‘uniquely designed’ by HotHardware, Lenovo started off the line-up with the IdeaCentre K210. In 2013, Lenovo’s IdeaCentre Horizon Table PC was introduced as a 27-inch touchscreen computer that was designed to lay flat for simultaneous use by multiple people and upright as a desktop computer.
Lenovo’s Smartphones come off as stylish and are industry-leading. In China of the year 2012, Lenovo launched a series of smart televisions that used the Android operating system called the LeTV. It is considered Lenovo’s first smart TV featuring the ability to display 3D content, a face-recognition feature, and voice recognition. They offer42-inch and 55-inch screen sizes and boast the capability of being controlled by tablets and smartphones.
It was rumoured that Lenovo was working on a wearable device that was branded ‘Smartband’. It has a battery life of seven days, optical heart-rate monitor, and can be used to track distance and time spent running and calories burned with added features of incoming calls and text notifications and to unlock computers with the use of passwords. The Smartband went on sale in October 2014.

Lenovo hosted its first ever ‘Tech World’ conference in Beijing in May 2015. The CEOs of Intel, Microsoft, and Badu delivered keynote addresses along with Lenovo’s CEO, Yang Yuanqing. The conference also acted as a platform to refresh its corporate logo and visual identity.
