The history behind the name and the establishment to where it is now

Being a Japanese multinational autonomous company, the Mitsubishi Group (also known as Mitsubishi Group of Companies or Mitsubishi Companies) has its roots way back in the 1870s. Yataro Iwasaki established the company as a shipping firm. The name came from the marriage of two parts; ‘mitsu’ meaning ‘three’ and ‘hishi’ meaning water caltrop. Together, they bring the meaning of ‘rhombus’ which is significantly is portrayed in the company’s logo. The name can also be translated in the meaning of ‘three diamonds’

As the company began to be the central role in the modernization of Japanese industry, with the merchant fleet entering a period of diversification, the company diversified into three entities, namely Mitsubishi Bank (which then became Japan’s largest bank), Mitsubishi Corporation (Japan’s current largest general trading company), and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (which is then divided into several categories; Mitsubishi Motors, Mitsubishi Atomic Industry, Mitsubishi Chemical, and Nikon Corporation).

The company played a vital role in the Second World War with the manufacturing of the war aircraft, ‘Mitsubishi A6M Zero’. The aircrafts we praised for their manoeuvrability, armor, and flying speed.

Jumping into the 2000s, after establishing 200 bases of operations in 80 countries worldwide, together with over 500 group employees, and a multinational workforce of over 54,000 people, Mitsubishi, particularly Mitsubishi Corporation, became Japan’s largest general trading company.

Mitsubishi’s corporate social responsibilities and its effort in help those in need

Mitsubishi’s primary CSR is divided into two main parts; philanthropy and environmental activities.

Philanthropy by Mitsubishi Materials Corporation

This CSR focuses on manufacturing proprietary products to help earthquake recovery efforts. Mitsubishi collaborates with the Japan Copper Development Association and the International Copper Association to produce their own UR3oST copper alloy containment wire for fish pen nets. This effort is to support the farming of silver or coho salmon in the town of Minami-sanriku, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.

Environmental Activities by Mitsubishi Motor Corporation

Mitsubishi innovated the world’s first Vehicle-to-Home Power Supply by PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electrical Vehicle), the Outlander PHEV Mark I. The hybrid car has been approved for recognition as an all electric vehicle as its engine does not run while the vehicle is connected to a V2H system. This here means that it is completely possible to use the Outlander PHEC as an emergency power source, supplying electricity stored in the vehicle’s outage.
