Mulberry’s feet are planted firmly on British turf. From exploring rebellious, aristocratic traditions to the revolutionary swinging sixties, its ready-to-wear line complements an impressive lineup of leather bags, including re-imagined classics such as the Amberley and Baywater. The brand’s way of playing on its heritage? Mixing up different styles to create something unique and fresh (in true Brit fashion, of course).
The first designs were buckled leather belts- soon, other accessories followed, including iconic bags and a womenswear line in 1979. The hallmarks of these Mulberry creations- timeless design coupled with traditional quality and a sense of the here and now - are the threads that run through everything Mulberry makes. Then, today and tomorrow.
Mulberry’s heritage- and hence our identity- is quintessentially British. Early inspiration was drawn from the styles synonymous with English rural pursuits- hunting, shooting, fishing- and Mulberry’s immediately-identifiable, utterly individualistic style came to be dubbed “Le Style Anglais” in 1975. Between town and country, between Somerset serenity and London pace, Mulberry combines authentic, age-honoured craft with an innovative fashion character. Heritage meets rebellion - rules are broken, to make something new.
Mulberry Iconic Bag Designs
The Bayswater is a Mulberry icon. Launched in 2003, its simple structure, timeless design and signature Postman’s lock made it an instant bestseller. Converted into a feminine backpack style, the Bayswater Backpack features adjustable side gussets with press studs to extend capacity or streamline the shape. This versatile style can be worn on the back, over the shoulder or carried hand-held to suit alternative looks and moods. Crafted from Mulberry’s signature grain leather in a range of heritage hues, it remains sturdy and timeless in its design.
Inspired by British countryside pursuits, the small Amberley Satchel was designed to be worn on the shoulder or hands-free across the body, with its shape and hardware borrowed from equestrian styling. The geometrical Rider’s Lock closure is also a reinterpretation of Mulberry’s iconic Postman’s lock - a bold and modern signature for the new collection.
The Lily is an effortlessly elegant style often chosen as an evening bag due to its versatile size and compact shape. The Lily has a woven leather and chain strap that can be worn short or long and is finished with signature details such as the postman’s lock and leather padlock fob.
The Antony is a classic Mulberry satchel designed in functional shape and unisex style. Thoughtfully equipped, it features an adjustable canvas strap that can be worn across the body or over the shoulder. Instantly recognizable, it is designed with the iconic Postman’s Lock detail.
A timeless, smaller Mulberry travel bag, this clipper has two short handles and a detachable leather strap with a maximum length of 90cm. Featuring a hidden padlock in a hanging leather pouch, double-ended zip closure, a suede-lined interior and an internal slip pocket.
Mulberry AW 20: Strength and Sensibility
This collection celebrates the innate strength and style of women throughout British history - and their legacy in British culture. The collection sees rural codes reimagined in today’s urban settings, bringing a soft nostalgia to the city’s utilitarian aesthetic. Rules of femininity and utility are rewritten through a romantic approach to a modern uniform.
The bag collection sees iconic Postman’s Lock silhouettes reimagined, with new Darley and Belted Bayswater styles joined by the Iris and a Mini Millie in playful new animations from leopard print and high-contrast check to burnished metallic. The Mulberry house palette predominates with heritage Oak, Navy, Oxblood, Deep Amber and Black, punctuated with arresting flashes of Scarlet, Powder Pink and Coral Orange. Mulberry Green makes its debut as a key colour in the collection, enhancing silhouettes with a rich hue familiar from the brand’s signature sustainable packaging and responsibility charter.
Flowing silhouettes dominate the outerwear and tailoring, with embellishments from traditional British uniforms: gold buttons, rosettes and shining medals adorn capes, double-breasted coats and relaxed suiting. They offset mid-length skirts and pussy-bow necklines that play with codes of demure dressing, becoming bolder for the evening, with bright embroidery, lavish brocade and bejewelled collars. Boots lead the daytime footwear edit from equestrian wellies to urban lace-ups with chunky, punkish soles. Penny loafers complement the fluid womenswear separates, carrying from day into night with contemporary ease. A quiet glamour defines the evening mood with elegant ankle-tie styles and a pyramid heel borrowed from Mulberry’s architectural Keystone Lock.
