Off-White is a fashion label founded by DJ and fashion designer Virgil Abloh, following his reappropriated art experiment, PYREX VISION. Virgil Abloh is responsible for the high fashion streetwear brand Off-White. Forcing the streetwear crowd to view the urban scene through his disruptive architectural eye, Abloh created a line that combines graphic emblems and Japanese infused structure for a hype-driven audience. After gaining momentum with his prior brand Pyrex, sold originally in his multi-designer boutique, Virgil used his outlook as a global citizen to create a new concept inspired by the cross-pollination of current omnichannel media. The outcome was an athletically city driven line with a high-end, gender neutral finish.
“What Stars Are You Under?” Off-White Collection
Off-White has reflected on the state of the world with its Spring/Summer men’s pre-collection, “What Stars Are You Under?” The Virgil Abloh-designed collection comments on resetting, repairing and revolutionizing the world. Given the current climate, with coronavirus and social justice causes changing how everyone is living their day-to-day lives, Off-White sought the opportunity to develop a collection that reflects on the moment.
As a result, Off-White presents everything from gloves that, when held up, read “I Support Young Black Businesses,” to a white hoodie that sports a graphic of a construction truck pushing the Earth along. As strong as the SS21 collection is - in terms of its tailoring, collection of accessories and footwear, or the elevated cuts we’ve come to expect of Abloh’s brand in recent years - it’s the commentary that makes a stronger impact.
Tailoring-Heavy “TORNADO WARNING” Collection
The collection puts a big focus on leather goods and tailoring. For example, a belted black leather biker jacket, black leather front-split flared trousers, a variety of pea coats and a medley of blazers stand out amongst more typical Off-White offerings, adding a much-welcomed touch of sophistication to the label’s aesthetic.
Accessories such as a briefcase bag, black leather caps finished with the new-style Off-White branding, small clutch bags and luxurious totes look perfect when paired with the new tailoring options, but also elevate looks when compared with the more casual pieces. In true Off-White form, there is a big focus on graphics; some standouts include the Mona Lisa T-shirt, the “Pivot” silver zip-up jacket, and the “Flowers” crewneck jumper.
Off-White Exclusive ‘90s-Inspired Capsule
Off-White occasionally issues exclusive capsules for its retail partners and its latest release keeps in line with that trend. Tsum Moscow, which hosted special events from the likes of Vetements in the past, is offering bespoke menswear, womenswear and accessories, much of which takes cues from ‘90s style, spotlighted in a heavily-stylized editorial. As such, various retro staples have been given an Off-White twist, ranging from the throwback dresses to glistening, industrial-inspired bags.
Menswear includes a variety of monochrome tees and hoodies, accompanied by flannel shirts, baggy carpenter jeans and zip wallets with attached chains, for a grungy look. Holiday shirts and pyjama sets lend a laid-back feel, while exclusive editions of Off White’s hiking boots and ODSY-1000 sneaker feature the Italian label’s iconic industrial tape branding.
Off-White x Nike Training Collaboration
Virgil Abloh and Nike’s popular collaboration continues as Nike unveiled its forthcoming Training Collection in partnership with Off-White. The assortment sees Abloh reinterpret Nike’s Pro pieces with a “youthful” and refreshing spin that’s accentuated with bold graphics and a distinctive colour palette.
Featured in a simple black and yellow palette, the capsule encompasses items such as leggings, biker shorts, sports bras and compression tops. Each style is marked by Off-White’s signature brand emblems including the arrow symbol and circular “Off” logo, while graffiti designs throughout offer an artistic touch.
Off White means “the grey area between black and white as the colour off-white.” It has shown collections at Paris Fashion Week shows and is sold in retail stores in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Milan, London and New York.
