Flowers and Their Meaning

A bouquet or basket of flowers can make for a perfect gift to your family, friends, and loved ones. However, before jumping right into it and getting the prettiest bouquet you can find, note that different flowers are associated to different meanings. So, if you’d like to send a message of love, affection, respect, or friendship, you can use different flowers to get your message across. Find out more below about the different types of flowers and their meaning.

Yellow Daffodil

This bright yellow flower represents new beginnings. It is also considered as a flower that symbolizes future success and luck. The daffodil is ideal if you are looking to wish someone well or good luck before an exam or big event.

Jasmine

This small white flower is the symbol of modesty, grace, and sensuality. Mostly available in tropical and sub-tropical areas, its sensual and heavenly fragrance makes it a very romantic flower. Jasmine is also associated with love and romance and is why the brides and bridegrooms in Pakistan wears garlands of white jasmine and red roses on their wedding day. This makes the jasmine flower ideal as a gift to a loved one.

Hydrangea

The meaning behind hydrangeas can be a little bit tricky. There are many meanings associated to this flower and sometimes the messages can be conflicting. The hydrangea was first cultivated in Japan where it was linked to gratitude and apologies. The blooms in pink is also associated to messages of adoration and love.

However, the Victorians aren’t as fond of the flower and they mainly used hydrangeas to declare that someone is boastful and frigid. It was also used as a means of turning a claim of love down. Nowadays, hydrangeas can be commonly found in wedding bouquets and floral arrangements to symbolize grace and abundance.

Tulip

Tulips come in many different colours and each would represent an entirely different meaning. To start, a yellow tulip symbolizes cheerful thoughts and can be used to wish someone well if they’ve fallen ill or if they simply need a “pick me up”. White tulips convey feelings of forgiveness while purple blooms represent royalty. Furthermore, you have red tulips that have been able to rival red roses in their romantic context - they bring a meaning of “perfect love”.

Orchid

One of the most versatile flowers, orchids have been used in fragrances, aromatherapy, as a flavor enhancer, and even in medicinal purposes. This exotic bloom is well-known across various cultures and have long been associated with love, fertility, and elegance. Orchids also come in a variety of colours, each with a different meaning. The white blooms symbolizes elegance, purity, and innocence while pink orchids mean femininity and grace. Yellow orchids are mostly given to celebrate an accomplishment or used to represent new beginnings. Furthermore, theses exotic blooms in purple represent royalty and admiration whereas orange orchids are given to represent pride, enthusiasm, and boldness.
