Marvel Comics continues their big screen invasion with the blockbuster Ghost Rider
! Director Mark Steven Johnson (Daredevil
) brings the iconic anti-hero with the flaming skull to life, courtesy of dazzling visual effects, plus a soulful performance from the always-entertaining Nicholas Cage.
Johnny Blaze (Cage) is a daredevil stunt motorcyclist, whose many brushes with death lead some to believe that he has a guardian angel on his side. In truth, Blaze has the exact opposite: the demon Mephistopheles (Peter Fonda) once made a deal with Blaze to save his father from cancer. As payment, Blaze is forced to become The Devil's Bounty Hunter, the chain-wielding, motorcycle-riding demon known as Ghost Rider. His mission is to stop Mephistopheles' son Blackheart (Wes Bentley) from usurping his father's position, but Blaze isn't comfortable working for his evil benefactor. Will the Rider rebel, and can he outrun the devil himself?
Ghost Rider is considered a B-list Marvel super hero, but the film Ghost Rider was an A-list blockbuster, earning a whopping $45 million dollars at the US box office during its opening weekend on February 16, 2007. The film went on to set a box-office record for the President's Day Weekend, with a worldwide total of over $220 million. Co-starring Eva Mendes (Hitch) as Johnny Blaze's estranged sweetheart, Ghost Rider is an action-packed, special effects-laden journey into the macabre, and yet another successful attempt to bring Marvel Comics' stable of heroes to the big screen.
