After dealing with the trials and tribulations of a young rocker in the two Nana
movies, director Otani Kentaro turns his attention to a young aspiring fashion designer in Runway Beat
, based on a popular cell phone novel by Harada Maha. The youth drama, adapted by Solanin
scriptwriter Takahashi Izumi, stars D-Boys' Seto Koji as a transfer student who brings his new classmates together to put on a big year-end fashion show at their high school. The "runway" in the film's title refers to both the runway in a fashion show and a figurative runway for the characters as they take off into adulthood. Producer Mase Yasuhiro (Departures
) said that he was inspired to make a youth film after going to a Funky Monkey Babys concert, and the group provides the film's theme song here.
Beat (Seto Koji) is an emotionally troubled youth who is entering a new high school. There, he meets a group of new friends, including Mei (Sakuraba Nanami), her friend Anna (Imalu), model Miki (Kiritani Mirei), and otaku Satoru (Tanaka Kei). A talented fashion designer, Beat eventually convinces his new friends to come together and put on a fashion show at the end of the school year. In the process, the classmates find friendship in each other, and Beat may even find love with Mei.
Haute Couture 3D Blu-ray Edition includes both 2D and 3D versions of the film (3D TV and Blu-ray player required for 3D version).
