They don’t advertise, they don’t use sweatshops and they don’t trade on their morals. Meet Veja: the ethically and ecologically grounded sneaker makers that are leading by example. Veja is a French company with a strong focus on transparency, fair trade and social and environmental responsibility. It collaborates incredibly closely with the factory that produces its sneakers to ensure the best work practices. Veja sources natural rubber directly from Seringueiro communities in the Amazon rainforest to save on water, energy and harmful emissions.
Rick Owens and Veja Team Up for Two Sustainable Footwear Styles
Veja and Rick Owens have joined forces for the release of two sneakers, each with its own sustainable elements. The first is an update to the brands’ collaborative Fall/Winter 2019 V-Knit sneaker, which was previously shown during Rick Owens’ Fall/Winter 2019 men’s runway show. The second is a hiking style developed for wear on rough natural terrain.
The runner’s upper is made from cosy wool knit- a naturally antimicrobial material. To cut down on plastic use, the silhouette features details made from vegetable castor oil. Additionally, the insole and outsole are made from a combination of natural materials, recycled plastic bottles and natural rubber from the Amazon.
Taking a sleeker approach to sustainability, the hiking-inspired “Venturi” silhouette is made from corn waste turned into a leather-like material. The use of this material cuts back on petroleum-based materials. Similar to the runner model, the vegan hiking style features an insole and outsole both made from recycled plastic bottles and natural rubber. The wool knit runner is currently available in beige, grey and black, while the Venturi is available in either black or white.
Veja has a variety of vegan sneakers, including the Nova White, Nova Canvas, Wate, SDU Rec, Flannel, B-Mesh and Rio Branco. Of the 81 styles, 20 are completely vegan. Another fundamental pillar that Veja is built on is fair trade. The brand works directly with farmers in Peru and Brazil on contracts and prices for their organic cotton before a single seed has been planted. Alternative materials such as tilapia and experiments with chrome-free suede, leathers and wild rubber are also in the pipeline to develop the sustainability of the brand.
The word ‘veja’ is a literal translation of the Portuguese-Brazilian for ‘look’- it means: look beyond the sneakers, look at how they are made, as explained by founder, Morillion. It means that it is possible to turn the world inside out, to start something where everybody earns a decent income, from the organic cotton producers to the stores that distribute the shoes.
To keep your pair of Vejas’ in tip-top condition, it is recommended to give them a spray with a waterproof solution before you wear them. For canvas Vejas’, simply brush off any scuffs or marks with a brush and some soap- don’t put them in the washing machine as this can cause the leather inserts to rub off. For leather styles, maintain the quality with leather care creams and sprays and use a suede brush to keep suede looking brand new.
What is the difference between Veja V10 and V12?
Wondering whether you should buy the Veja V10 or V12 trainers? The truth is that the two types of shoes are quite similar. However, the main difference here is that the V12 shoes tend to run a little narrower than the V10s. So, if you prefer a tighter fit, they are right for you.
Generally, Veja sneakers are true to size, so we would recommend going for your usual size; however, each style may fit your foot differently. As with most leather footwear, it may take a few wears to mould to the unique shape of your foot. If you are in between two sizes, we suggest choosing the smaller size.
